RWTK: Snoring, do you or your partner have the problem?

So anyway I've always been in denial that I am not a snorer. However he last two partners I had would not stop whinging about my wood sawing sound at night. I noticed that my nose is usually blocked when I go to bed and sleeping on the side did not help.

Do you or your partner have the particular problem? And if so, did you take any action to minimize/eliminate the problem?

If you deliberately make a snoring sound, does pushing your jaw forward stop it or make it more difficult? If it does, then you may get some benefit from a Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS). You can get them made up by your dentist (usually), and they should be covered by your private health insurance.

Have been through the ENT rigmarole, even with a take-home sleep analysis rig and he came to the conclusion mine was a buildup of tissue around my throat which would require corrective surgery. No apnoea. Only a 25% chance of success and a 50% chance of permanent scarring which would make it worse. I lost weight and quit smoking but that didn't help.

Interesting about the MAS, Sventek: after teaching a first aid course I was lying in bed playing around with jaw positioning one night and realised that the 'open up the airway' by getting the jaw forward stopped the lead-in to the snoring. Of course, holding it forward during sleepytime is a little difficult. More investigation required

I use one, and it works very well. If you get one, though, I'd recommend starting to use it on a Friday night. The pain is intense for the first couple of days. No pain at all now.

I have one of the MAS mouthpieces. Have sleep apneoa reduced weight from over 90 kg down to 81-82kg no difference, mouth guard stops the snoring and get a good night uninteruppted sleep. Also prescribed valdoxan to get off to sleep as well (melatonin). The mouth things take some getting used too as you make minor adjustments and wind them out. Can feel a bit uncomfortable at first.

Hmmm. I hope it works for you, but mine cost around $1,200 and was tailor made, as well as being adjustable. Mind you, I only wound up paying $100 or so after my health fund rebate. If it has potential, it might be worth going down the tailor made path.

Yeah, mine cost $1200 from Dr. Balasubramaniam at St Johns hospital. I'd say you've got something more for bruxism and it'll just be a top plate to stop wearing the enamel from your teeth. I used to have one but they're hard plastic. The top guard has little titanium mechanism to adjust the spacer forward in increments to pull the jaw forward.

I've always snored to a degree I think but in recent years as I've gotten older the missus reckons it has gotten worse, went to the Respiratory Sleep Disorders Clinic in SCGH, had my initial consult a few weeks ago and go in next week for a full on sleep study Just got a referral from my GP, sometimes can take a little while to get in (I waited about 2 months) compared to full private clinics but is a lot cheaper Mine is for snoring/sleep apnoea as the missus also reckons that my breathing slows and stops for about 20 seconds (actually worries her more than the snoring) and I get leg twitches as well Had my tonsils, adenoids and grommets in my ears at 6 yrs old so they aren't causing it

Sleep Clinic Dr said losing some weight would possibly help slightly BUT was most likely the way the pallet in my mouth was made that was causing mine

Had my sinus's scraped, packed and the septum straightened as well so that's out as well

The SC Dr talked about maybe getting a splint made up as a 1st step before trying the full face mask type setup, will see after the full sleep study next week

One thing I've also found helps is a decent pillow, I've used a contoured pillow for years due to neck pain from injuries and if the pillow is getting old/soft/deformed etc that can make things worse

Ew. That sounds nasty. I had a septoplasty, turbinectomy, tonsillectomy, tongue base channeling, transpalatal advancement and a uvulopalatalpharyngoplasty. Worked for me. Went from 108 apneas to 15. I just wish I had it all done sooner.

Nup, those ones are the flasher ones.

I don't know whether these would help and I'm working against what the ENT surgeon said (ie "you're fucked, there's nothing you can do to help it short of surgery") so I bought the cheap ones which will at least indicate whether the technique will work for me. Apparently they're pretty uncomfortable compared to the proper ones so, if it works, I'll look into getting a sweet custom rig.

Fairy nuff. Good luck with it. Just give yourself a few days to overcome the pain before you make up your mind completely.
