    Submarine disasters

Was searching around for diving shipwreck sites and came across the story of the USS Thresher sub. The history behind it really intrigued me and I'm trying to find out a bit more about other sub disasters now.

The ones I know of are -

    Thresher
    Scorpion
    K-19
    Kursk

Theres lots of info on the above, but maybe someone could shed some light on some less well known ones? Or interesting shipwrecks?

    that was the Kursk.

wikipedia actually has good stories/accounts/etc about them. Have spent many a nightshift just reading lots of things like that.
As a general rule, the better it felt when you said it, the more trouble it's going to get you into.

Get the book 'Few Survived' by Edward Gray. Make sure you get the latest edition as there are a few.
It has all the notable losses including those you've listed and the Kursk.
I first read it years ago whilst at sea on a submarine, certainly was food for thought!

You sir, have rather large brass ones. I love diving but the thought of being in a sub at 100m + with zero chance of survival if it all goes wrong scares me slightly.

I'll be sure to check that book out as well.

One book reccommended on PSB was Blind Mans Bluff, about submarine missions during the cold war. In particular, the fate of K19, aka Hiroshima. This sub was one of the first soviet nuclear subs, and had a meltdown on its first voyage. The story of the men who sacrificed their lives to save the sub makes for a gripping read..

A quick google search found this List of submarine incidents since 2000 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm amazed how many major accidents have happened in the last 10 years where the sub has run aground.

I've been serving in Submarines since '94 and have been involved in several quite interesting moments; fires, floods (including the 'big one' on Dechaineux in 2003), full power failures, casualties etc. Working at sea on any sea going platform is dangerous (went to the Gulf on a carrier in 91/92 and we had over 50 deaths onboard).
Submarines are technically more complicated than spacecraft (with many more systems) and the ocean is an unforgiving mistress. Dan Van Der Vat wrote an excellent book back in the 90's (called Submarines iirc) detailing many submarine accidents over the last 100 or so years. Back in those days the engineering and design was trial by error and since then submarines have redundancies for redundancies. But still, shit happens, technical failures, design failures, human error or just plain ol' bad luck. We train on safety and procedures ad nauseum, which is why we have not (touchwood) lost one yet.

On everything I have served on, shit has happened. At least I know I can trust the training and skills of everyone I sail with....

    HMAS Brisbane '87-89
    HMAS Perth '89-91
    HMAS Stuart '91

    HMAS Orion '94-96
    HMAS Farncomb 99-01
    HMAS Dechaineux 01, 03
    HMAS Waller 02,08,10-11
    HMAS Collins 03-05

    ...and several USN/RN units.

This whole event is amazing...... I posted in the Documentary thread a few days back. It is totally James Bond style Cold War action. Imagine the resources we would have if we were not spending it fighting? (A little less exciting however )

...they only sent the the (former) USSR the videos of the ocean burials of the crew they had recovered in 1996!
