I know when I have a day off I normally have a few loose ends that need to be sorted. So I have to speak to somebody to pass those tasks on.
In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

If I had an SMS on a Monday morning, I would maybe think that the employee is just hung over and can't be bothered calling me.
How will I tell him that he needs a doctors certificate? Are you saying that you honestly cannot talk for long enough to say "Hi, It's ____, I'm too sick to come to work today, I'll get a doctors note"
If you called me, and I could genuinely hear that you are sick, then OK.
It's not difficult to show that little bit of respect to an employer. It's not like he can force you to go to work anyway.
Edit: This is just my opinion anyway.

You're too sick to talk for 15sec on the phone, but not too sick to vent about it online for 15mins?
I call bullcrap.
A year of sms sickys? How many sickys do you have a year?
Sounds to me like your boss is more sick of all your sickys, as opposed to how you inform him of it.
Maybe he thinks you are just having days off, so having you call allows him to tell if you really are sick.
I would imagine if you are too sick to talk on a phone, you should be in hospital.
As an employer, i would make you provide a doctors certificate too if you have a lot of sick days.

Is it OK for the boss to sms you to say your services are no longer required ?
Intelligence and education are three sides of the same coin.

It makes my day when people come on here to vent a massive injustice against them, only to be unanimously slammed by PSB as being a whiny little bitch.
I've done the SMS thing in the past, but only because I was able to get away with it. (The bosses would SMS me with shit themselves, so it was a mutual thing), these days though it's always a quick call. 8 times out of 10 I'm just leaving a voicemail anyway haha.
I'd SMS my boss - but only because he's a c**t and I can't be bothered talking to him. He hates me too so its a win/win.

I got my Mum to call once but they accepted it because she held the phone next to my head over the toilet spewing my guts up. Couldn't stop throwing up long enough to talk.
What a waste of a sick day
(it was the only day off I had for the whole year though and not even self inflicted.)

Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground...

I've kept in touch with bosses via email or text, but if I'm unwell, a phone call is ideal. I would say an email is *occasionally* acceptable, depending on your working relationship, job function, if you can then work from home, etc..etc..etc..
If you're just casually SMS'ing your boss every time you're feeling a bit rough, then you deserve a bum kicking.
**edit: I think the last time I sms'd a boss was a couple of years ago, something like "Being raped by cops on the road side, be a bit late."
