TWTK: How the hell to use Quick Time

Hello PSB, Done a serchy thingo on "quick time player" and nothing specific came up so I'm going to ask for some help. I have a Mac Book Pro with verison 10.6.8 on it.
Quick time doesn't work for anything and I am currently downloading a Telestream (free trial) thingo as the Apple help site says.
Is their anything else I can do that is more permanent than trials that don't let me download the full thing that doesn't mean I have to download 4 different types of software for all the extra money?
This has been ticking me off for ages since I got my Mac and nothing video damn well works!
    Please help!

(feel free to post your hate for Macs- I know it's going to happen....)
Hi- I'm Emma! (aka Twigs, Twiglett, whatever you come up with at the time)

Just some Windows Media WMV stuff.... but Anything I'm sent like a funny video through an Email or whatever- I can never view it and it pisses me off at no end.
Downloading VLC at the moment so fingers crossed it works- if not I'll try out Perian- thanks Padfoot

    VLC will play anything.

Perian for if you still want to use Quicktime (I've never been VLC's biggest fan for some reason, but I always have it installed as a backup since I know it will pretty much always work.)

Windows Media Components for QuickTime - Microsoft Windows
I also have this installed for any WMV files... Although Perian may take care of them nowadays? Its been a while since I did a clean system restore.

What he said, and don't ever display the prowess of streaming video out of mac over hdmi. It invokes "Murphy's Law" when done in front of a crowd.
