    Views on corporal punishment

I just chanced upon this article on domestic dispensed corporal punishment and the findings are quite interesting.

It suggests that children that have been spanked when young by their parents turn out more successful later in life, did better at school and were more optimistic about their lives than those never hit by their parents.

    Article here

Now the sample size was small and the findings have some negative findings as well so lets just leave that out for this discussion.

What I'd like to know is do you think corporal punishment in a domestic setting is acceptable and if you think it has benefited you as an adult. (if you have been spanked when young)

Personally, all my brothers and I have been on the receiving end of a rattan cane and even in the education system, we have copped a few from teachers if we were out of line.

I think if dispensed fairly and within reason, it keeps the kids in line and I agree with its use. I also think that the some kids in Australia have too little discipline in their life with parents having no control over their children's behavior.

I've turned out ok and still have a good relationship with my parents with a lot of healthy respect. Corporal punishment for us ended 100% when we reached 12 years old.

    Do share your views/experience.

I was smacked when I was little for doing things that I shouldn't have. It didn't happen often, and I think I'm a better person for it now.

I think a combination of solid boundaries and fitting punishments (corporal or not) are important when growing up.

Yes I was, not often enough, yes I agree with it. I don't believe it should stop when a child grows up, either. Public canings? Absolutely.

I'd agree with corporal punishment for dangerous driving, violent crime and reality TV shows.

Edit: and sexual assault and child porn.

I was smacked for misbehaving, and force fed hot English mustard for swearing, last time I got a thump was probably 15 I did defiantly deserve that one.

I behave and have a great deal of respect for my parents. some times kid do deserve a tap on the butt, time out don't work all the time

I agree with coporal punishment when appropriate.
I've had a whipping when I was about 8, I can clearly remember. Dad wanted the tap to the hose turned on... I turned it on, nothing happened... so obviously my fault....
    Tabasco for swearing or lying.
Never let anger blur the punishment required.

The current never-blame-the-kids attitude will result in little to no responsibility being borne by the children of today and the future.

This. I shan't start as I'll whore out the thread with my rant.

I prefer Capital punishment, then you know they wont ever do it again.

Similar to Shadow78, I once copped a thrashing for damaging the new brick steps my dad built at our house. Turned out the damage was my mum and granny dragging a wardrobe out to the shed that my dad had promised to move. I never copped another hiding after that because every time I deserved one I reminded him of the bricks.
30 odd years on and I still bring it up when we argue!

Whilst away with another family for new year their youngest son (9 or 10)was not happy with what his mother was doing.
He told her so and called her a fcuking idiot.
I told him in front of his parents that if he was my son he would be sore about now.
He wasn't keen on that but remained undiciplined.

Good parenting isn't beating your kids every day. If so, what you are doing obviously isn't working, that's just abuse.

Good parenting is using the threat of force 99% of the time, and only resorting to it when necessary. I know as a kid I wasn't actually punsihed that often, but when I was it was more than enough to keep me in line. After that just the mention of using the wooden spoon/strap etc was enough to get us to pull our heads in.

So, in summary, if it's used sparingly, impartially and rationally, I have no objections whatsoever.

Spank those little shits fair into line! Overly PC tree hugging hippies GARNGIPHUQUED!!!

Agree with the threat of force rather than over use of actual force. It was usually enough to keep myself and mates inline although I do recall at the time some kids parents being rediculously over the top and those kids being quite strange. Almost as strange as the ones who's parents wont tell them no and don't beleive in any form of discipline.

I really feel for Gen-Z. They're in for a serious shock when they hit the real world and realise failure and denial is a part of every day life. They'll be even more shocked than the Gen-Y's.

Agree with it 100%, we were only belted a few times growing up but just knowing that it would happened if we crossed the line stopped alot of silly and often dangerous occasions from happening (except the time we found some dynamite, but thats a different story).

It's interesting comparing how I was raised to my partner (who is a good few years younger then me) and our two little ones. She is very against smacking and the kids know it, but they also know that I will smack without hesitation if they get out of hand... and of course even she relies on "daddy's coming to smack" more often then not. It's going to be one of those wait till your father gets home households lol.

In all honesty though, I can count on 1 hand where I have had to smack either of them combined, because after the first couple of times they know if dad say's enough (or mum calls for dad) they need to stop what their doing and pay attention, as stated above just the thought of it makes them pull their head in.

    Corporal punishment works.

I have experienced corporal punishment both at home and at school whilst growing up. In my experiance, it worked for me, my brother and my classmates. I much preferred corporal punishment over detention. Especially three hour Saturday detentions.

Do-gooders and political correctness will be the downfall of western society. The only thing that prevents (most) of us from doing bad stuff is the threat of punishment - sadly kids today are fearless because there is none thanks to those airy fairy muthafucks.

I got smacked on occasion, and i was shit scared to step out of line.

I know a few kids personally these days who never got a tap, and they have no respect for their parents, elders, or cops. Blows my mind to hear the latest updates on what they've been up to.

As with most here, it's a good thing when used as a last resort.
