    Vigilante Justice

Let's say your bike is stolen.
...or you've got a little thieving vandalising sh*t causing trouble in your neighbourhood, but a slap on the wrist or a stern talking to because he's only 15 is what's waiting at the end of official channels.

Do you straighten him out home-style or still pursue official channels?

Given the fight or flight nature, I honestly don't know how I'd go until I would be in that situation.

The last traumatic situation I was in, I was surprisingly cool as a cucumber, until the adrenaline wore off. I'm hoping it won't be a once-off, and I can go all Beatrix Kiddo on their arse.

I was once on the receiving end of "vigilante justice" when I was 12 years old, copped a good kicking from two men, my 8 y.o. cousin managed to get away after one let go of him to hit me from behind so his mate could sink the boots in to me on the ground (real tough even handed blokes). Got a fairly hard kick in the side of my head which partially lifted me up and I used the momentum to use my fleet footed skills and escaped.

My cousin went on to a life of crime, mainly stealing, selling drugs and a bit of extortion.

I led a "normal" life and am a good citizen.

I do despise authority, bullies, stand over merchants and injustice. I have often stepped in to correct these situations.

By the way the "vigilantes" (I prefer to call them fuckwit thugs) got the wrong kids but offered no apology, the Police werent interested as it was the good old days when kids were often belted for their own good.

    I voted against.

It's great when it's deserved and meted out "appropriately". Unfortunately there's too much room for mistakes, or excessive force brought about by people feeling righteous (oh hai, Chew).

One of those things where the only people who should be doing it are the ones who'd feel horrible for doing it. Otherwise it's just revenge.

Dead set against, for the same reason as many of you, as I am, are anti the W.A. coppers.
The courts are there to judge guilt or otherwise, not the friggin cops, nor us.

It all sounds good in theory, but I like many have been mighty outraged when the popo pick on the wrong people.

At the place where I pick up my pay check, we have many people from other lands...inclduing many from South Africa. This is not a racist attack on South Africans, but for decades their justice system was different to ours...and may still be.
It's all well and good to laugh at police beating the crap out of some poor bloke to elicit a confession, until they get the wrong person...like his brother.

Vigilnate justice, like suspect policing, (Andrew Mallard et al) is all good and well, proving it happens to other people.

Just wait until you or your family are unjustly attacked. It happens.

I voted for because in some cases I feel you may not be able to contain yourself, mostly if the crime was of the obvious nature.
I dont however believe that it is a practicable or sensible solution with the amount of repercussions involved.

True, but if science had the funds religion has enjoyed for eons we might have better explanations by now, or at least hover shoes.

25 years ago I was returning to my car and noticed a shadowy figure attempting to break in.
Snuck down amongst other cars and nabbed him, spun him round, pinned him against the car and was about to give him a lesson in consequences.
Time seemed to stand still, the guy was trembling, started crying and then pissed himself.
I could not bring myself to hit him, this poor bastard was a hopeless junkie and had not eaten in days.
Stood back, we had a brief chat and I gave him $20. I have no idea if he got a feed or his next fix.
The gungho on here will no doubt say I am a soft touch and should have taught him a lesson.
I would like to think I did the right thing, so that is a definite no vote from moi.

Depends what they did - having kids, I don't know how I'd go if someone hurt them...

I could let justice play its part - or I could exact revenge.

In some situations the law just doesn't measure up to the punishment needed.

Revenge is an interesting concept, does it actually achieve anything, or is it a caveman response?

Not sure. It really would depend on the circumstance.

For crimes of property I am more than happy to let the law of the land play its part.

I think that the Justice system has forgotten its roll in handing out punishment, revenge is personal its not a cave man response its a natural reaction only political correctness has deemed both punishment and revenge to be unacceptable.

    Definatly cave man
Nothing wrong with being a cave man, at least you a man ,not a boy.
revenge can be usfull in a couple of ways,
From the grayman - nothing to see what happend you say , All mystery and bad luck it appears.= primitive mabey, but still satisfying.
Public , = dont fuck with me, us , them ect ect

    Everything has a place,
Wether things are thought out or not is often questionable.

Are you happy with our current justice system ?
A bit of street justice can be sobering for many of the next big thing mentality wannabee crims out there.

Perhaps you've forgotten the point of punishment - to deter offenders. It's not to make things even, not to make the victims feel better, but to attempt to make the commission of an offence no longer seem worth it to those who aren't stopped by ethics.

Sure, there are some people who need to be set straight and could be by a little roughing up, but there are also those who might be further pushed down a bad path, especially by those who go overboard. Those who feel it's their "right" to deal out a little pain are most likely to get the red mist and end up doing something unacceptable, IMHO.

It's a second hand story but a friend of a friend in the country caught some little buggers breaking in to his business one night. He decided to mete out some punishment on the spot and gave both of the bastards a hiding. He felt great about teaching them a lesson and thought sure he had deterred them from further crimes.

That was until they decided to take revenge and came back with others and beat the crap out of him and burned his business to the ground.

Revenge goes both ways and it can escalate way beyond the level you are willing to take it to.
