    how to convince the mrs

    hi,

Not been over here long, was an avid rider in the uk.

Since being over here, mrs and i are shocked at the shit driving standards over here, mrs has a friend thats a nurse. she's telling the mrs how many motorcyclists are coming through the doors on trollys , and not all intact.

i need to find some statistics to show her its not that bad. even the bike salesman tells me he has a near miss every day. is it really that bad out there ??

There are some people that do indeed have near misses every time they get on a bike, and others who almost never have them; some riders aren't much better than the car drivers they disparage, it's never their fault so why should they change the way they ride.

I worked in underground mines for many years, and the safest mines were usually the ones with the poorest ground conditions, it encouraged you to pay attention to what was going on around you. Tell your missus that, that by knowing there is a problem you will be more vigilant about your own safety

+1, just as 51 said. In 20 yrs I can only think of maybe 5 instances where I've had an oh shit moment. Only two of those were actually close calls, and only one of them would have ended with me properly injured had luck not been on my side. Know the dangers, learn, learn and then learn some more. The day I feel I know it all and have nothing left to learn is the day I'll hang up my keys for good.

It's not luck that's kept me alive, it's being cautious and riding like everyone wants me dead.

the only statistics you need to show her are the weekly repayments and maintenance costs

    you're a big boy right?

seriously though there are plenty of riders with long and uneventful riding careers, they just don't leave a mark.

Welcome along mate, plenty of poms on here have experienced the same culture shock on WA roads.

The statistics for riders are probably on a par with statistics for drivers and pedestrians if you look at percentages so either way it's your choice, ride, drive or walk.

Assuming you are a capable and confident rider, then you should be OK.

BTW, Your 1st post bagging Aussie motorists may incite some negative 3 word racial comments beginning with whingeing.

if she stays in the kitchen where she belongs, she will never know you even have a bike...

Lol when i first decided to ride again i was worried for about 2 minutes what my mrs thoughts were on it. I spoke to her about it and she started helping me decide on a bike that night.

Judge Dread - thanks for the kind words of encouragement.

Seriously, dont get me wrong, back in the UK I was an observer for the IAM. But yeah, let me have my moment of whinging, what the F is all the undertaking about, if thats not a licence to die what is?

I know the Mrs is'nt worried about my ability, but its the dodgy drivers who have no clue or care..

    I'll keep pestering her..

Yeh, I grew up in France. The undertaking here still shits me... but it's legal, believe it or not. You just have to adapt and get more adept at your head checks on the left as well as the right.

Eyh bloody hell lad got t' tell t' missus it's not as daft as workin down t' pit eyh...

Mate if you've got joint accounts then your probably fucked as the statistics (compared to cars) aren't that great. If you've got some of your own money or the ability to earn extra then it's up to you what you do with it even if she isn't too impressed. She'll get over it. Mine did.

Sorry OP, but it sounds a little like your mrs is trying to find excuses and you're letting her.

Go get a bike - tell her that fear has never held you back and that's not the kind of man she married. Speak softly, but speak firmly and with conviction.

Point her to the kitchen and explain why a lovely supper means so much to you, and give her a realistic return time so she can prepare a celebratory meal for you on the occasion of your shiny new steed.

When you leave - blow a kiss and when she's says "I love you", get all Han Solo on her arse and say "I know".

    She'll only love you more.

    Probably.
