    1198 no start!!

I'm doing a trip for a week on an 1198, was hired for a week. On the way back to my hotel from the Assen tt a warning light came on and it lost power then eventually died. Doesn't crank like it has a flat battery, but I'm also guessing it isn't charging either, is this a common problem with the 1198? Any easy fixes? Ideas anyone?

I was picked up by a nice guy who is trying to help me get the bike back to my hotel, there are still some nice people out there.

Tried to call the mob I hired it off, conveniently they aren't open till Monday, which is when I'm sposed to drop it off in Frankfurt 500km away. As for the roadside assist that was promised, well yeah what roadside assist...

Anyone with any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

does it have any power ie dash lights etc
if not check the terminals havnt worked loose
also you should be able to check the voltage via the speedo
also what was the warning light?

It's got power to the dash, if you scroll through the screen then it comes up and says there's 10 volts at the battery, which is low.. Warning light was on the bottom LHS of the dash, it's an orange ! in a triangle.. Go to start and it just gets the solenoid click like a flat battery then nothing.

Is there a fuse or something that blows and stops charging? Water? Been doing lots of riding in the wet...

Not much I can do now till Monday, nothings open and I got no tools to do anything anyways.. Bit of a downer an a good trip.

Re-read my first post. There should be a comma after "doesnt crank".

The voltage regulator on the 1098's were recalled and gave people all sorts of problems , not sure if the 1198's have the same issue though?
Could be the problem, or your battery is toast , obviously reading well low at the moment.

a fault code is thrown if the battery drops under a certain voltage, its probably the regulator.

Yep if you've only got 10v, it's obviously either the regulator or perhaps the alternator. Definitely something to do with the charging circuit.

Putting a new batt in will get you started, but if it's the charging system then eventually that batt will die as well (likely within a very short period of time)...

ok...its most likely the VR or fuse.

Start by checking the VR fuse. If it's in the same place as my 1098, you remove the left mid faring. There is a fuse by itself forward of the battery in a little 'box'. Check it.
This fuse is seperate from the main fuse box above the battery.

I can give you the specs, and workshop manual guide in an email if you want.

if you have trouble, let me know. The fairing removal is pretty straitforward. 2 click-out fasteners at the top inside, near the radiator + 1 screw at the front under the headlight. The rest are very visiable. Oh, there's a lug at the bottom front, locating the belly-pan....when you put it all back, locate that first.
The fuse is in-line, and is in a little box, between the VR (under the Battery ) and the alternator / battery. something like that, but you'll see it at the front of the Batt .

    mmmm....ok, fuse is good, eh

Then, I'd say the battery is poked. Could be the VR itself, but 1198 didnt have that problem.

Check the connections, all terminals, Batt and Alternator, but it's gotta be the state of the battery ( ie farked )

Mmmm good times, I'm thinking it's not charging and the battery has run flat... That's why it died.. Otherwise it would push start... Ah well, getting to meet some of the locals. They are quite entertained.
