748 sps
Ducati 748sps 1998 for sale - TradeMe.co.nz - New Zealand
Should a 1998 748 SPS have a plaque on the top triple clamp? I thought all the special models did have that plaque?
Should it have Ohlins forks? which would be a different colour to the ones in the pics?
Does that carbon hugger look right?
How much for second hand 748 or 996 motors in Aus? Would I have any particular problems importing this to WA in a few months time ( in it's current state )?
Anything else anyone can spot that doesn't look correct for an SPS?
If it looks reasonable to you knowledgable fellas, I might just keep an eye on it. Thanks guys.

I think you'll come into import restrictions mate. If you where going to race it then all good, but i imagine you want it as a road bike?

You could as a personal import, but there is a time constraint, something like you must own the vehicle for 6/12 *** whatever moths before you head over (with proof) *** cant quite remember the exact figure

Has the cast Iron rotors of the "Specail models" Blown motor depends on whats nuked head gearbox etc etc some of the SPS/R's also have different cases barrels etc etc. Wouldn't touch it unless I could see it bike importing has been discussed at length try a search.

You really have to see the first four characters of the VIN - those up-specced versions usually have ZDMH at the start (H=Homologation). Going by the capacity stated it looks like it might have a 853 kit in it too. For that price it would be a good project as I wouldn't trust any of it - engine needs fixing anyway ($$$) so rebuilding the rest of the bike won't seem that bad....
I'm not sure about the triple clamp plaque - I thought they had 'em but sometimes the 748's and 749's didn't come with those things where the big versions did. Proof of it is the VIN.

The guy just got back to me and said the first 7 numbers of the chassis number are ZDM748S . No "H" in there, so with a chassis number like that is it a genuine SPS or a 748S that has been pimped?

I think back in the day there was not S/R version you ethier got the Biposto (standard twin seater) or the sps, might be worth googling ducati 748 models and see if there is a graphic description of whats what when. The pic appears to have the upgraded brakes ohlins rear shock and single seat of the SPS I can't remeber if they had flash front ends as well I don't think they did. Or better yet ring a ducati shop and ask someone who knowes the Frasers spare parts guys seem to be pretty switched on about all the various variations between the models.

I believe the first 748 special was the 748 SP, and it had cf guards and a ohlins shock, titanium pankl conrods, sand cast heads, showa forks and normal rims and cast iron fully floating front disc that rattled, I have a brochure for it at home somewhere. but i expect either a PSB duck owners to confirm this or a ducati forum on the web.

From Wikipedia:
Ducati produced several variations of the 748, starting with the basic 748 Biposto (meaning "twin seat") in 1994 and then the 1995-96 748SP and 1996-99 748SPS followed as more powerful options. The SP and SPS engines were in a higher state of tune and also came only as Monoposto (meaning "single seat"), although it was possible to order the base 748 with a monoposto option, and were intended as homologation machines for World Supersport racing. Other extras over the base model included Ohlins rear shock and fully-floating cast iron Brembo brake disks. The engines also came with an oil cooler.
In 2000, Ducati revamped their 748 model line to include a third variation:
The base model was now known as the 748E, available as Biposto or Monoposto, with 3-spoke gold wheels and gold frame. Gone were the quick-release Dzus fasteners on the fairing, replaced with plain fairing fasteners, and the frame also had a fixed steering head angle. The rear shock was a Sachs-Boge unit with Showa forks at the front. This helped to keep costs down.
The intermediate model was known as the 748S. This had lighter 5-spoke Marchesini wheels in grey to match the grey frame, also retaining the earlier adjustable steering head. The rear shock was now a Showa unit with Showa forks at the front, making use of Titanium-Nitride (TiN) coating on the fork stanchions to "reduce stiction", which also gave it a gold coloring. The engine was a derivative of the earlier SPS, making use of the higher state of tune, and also included an intermediate exhaust system of 50mm headers connected to 45mm exhaust cans.
The top of the range model was now the 748R, Ducati's racing homogolation model produced only in very limited numbers. This engine was again a derivitve of the SPS model but with more tuning. The main difference is that the R model has an overhead shower-injector arrangement compared to the 748E and S model's traditional throttle bodies, titanium conrods, titanium valves and more extreme valve timing. As such, the 748R has a larger, two-part airbox and thus the frame was also different to accommodate this. The suspension choice was Ohlins for both the rear shock and front forks, although the very first models in 2000 used Showa TiN front forks and a Showa shock absorber. The engine included a very basic slipper clutch to ensure that this would then be homogolated for use in racing and also an oil cooler.
So according to this the SPS became the R in year 2000?
Some other people are asking on the auction if this really is an SPS, and for the vendor to provide more info in the way of engine and chassis numbers etc etc. Will keep up to date as more info comes in from vendor.
Thanks to you guys who have already replied, might save me from buying something that's not as it seems and then having issues with paperwork etc.

That number supplied looks more like the engine number. My bike (999R) has ZDMH400 at the start of the VIN and ZDM999W on the start of the engine number.

here we go again, i shall attempt to answer your queries plus more
No plaque until the R models.
No Ohlins front end until 2001 748R all SP/SPS had high end showa (they are good and don't blow seals like the ohlins)
Carbon hugger is not the standard one
S/H motors, no idea.
Decals are from earlier SP not SPS. looks like they have been added as the 98SPS has only got the DUCATI just under the fairing joint (still on this one) and the black 748SPS on the white part of the seat. the rest was plain (including the tank)
Black air duct stuff is missing (hold the indicators) as is the V shaped breast plate that goes between the fairing halves and over the front head
Methinks it is a fake as my eng number starts with ZDM748W and the frame ZDM1PB1R. I checked mine with Ducati Aust before i bought it five years ago (second owner)
Personally I wouldn't touch it from what i see here quite apart from th epotential hassles of importing, especially if not a real SPS.
Oh and btw the real SPS is fantastic as long as you dial the cams and put a FIM chip in it.
a real 98 SPS except i replaced the c/f front guard with a yellow one and put a c/f breast plate on in place of the yellow one
oh yeah, if it is real then it should come with two exhaust systems, two ignition chips, rear paddock stand and cover

Standard and s model 999 have the ZDMH at the start of their vin as well for the Australian versions at least.
