    848 as a first sports bike ?

I wish I could afford it.

    To the 848 owners,
A freind of mine , well he has ridden dirt heaps, has a Motard although I have never seen it riden.
Now at the ripe age of 40 wants to try sports bikes, He has a bit of coin and has his hart set on an 848.

    Sexy bikes they are,
He asked me what I think of them.
I dont know much to be hounest, I have read the early ones had some problems with the radiator.
    Thats about it,
So , are they a good bike to set a bass as a sports rider.
Or do they fall into the to agressive side of the line.

He is thinking of bying brand new, I my self am not so sure thats a wise idea .

They are a bit hard re the seat and aggressive 'bar' setup, so will have none of the easy seating position that the Moto has. The pipes burn your legs on a hot day.

Apart from that they still do 100 k's/h on the freeway , and they look pretty. As a 40 year old with no real sportbike experience[?] , it is probably a good choice as the thous are fast, really fast. The end of the road comes up deceptively quickly.

The sound of the twin is also addicitve , and if he has decided on the Duke then talking him into another bike straight up might be a bad thing.
Better let him decide if the sore wrists, sore back and burnt ass is the choice for him!

As for new, is he interested in the Evo , or the standard '48?

[note: advise him that nodding to other riders who don't own Ducati' is totally unacceptable! ]

As a first big bike...without knowing him ide say ..not a great 1st choice
Great bike visually but a little on the unforgiving side if your aggressive on the throttle

    New evo .
I would have gone a cheeper jappa myself, but he has the coin and yes 848 as opposed to 1198 will be a good decision.
    He hasent brought anything yet.
I do think the riding style and the reflex actions needed might take him by suprize.
I know it did me when I first switched to road.
Used to kick my leg out farward all the time when I thought I was coming in hot

Stevo, the beauty of the 848 is that it is nice and torquey, but less likely to bite you than the bigger brother.
    It IS actually quite forgiving.

But it's not about the bike, it's about his head.
If he's sensible about it, there is absolutely no reason why he couldn't start on one.

As pointed out, considerations for him, are how uncomfortable it can be, and the heat during the summer.
    Just keep it moving

If he's got his heart set on one, take it for a spin to make sure the seating position is good for him (it's a pretty long bike and suits the taller lads).
You don't want to fall in love with a bike you can't ride for more than 30 minutes

If he's ridden dirt heaps he will be fine, tell him to get the 848 or he will regret it. Better still get a 1098.

i can think of worse bikes to start on, at least it has good handling and brakes and with the power delivery of the v twin he will know what he's in for from the beginning, none of this winding up to test your limits then realising too late you've gone in too hot, i've seen plenty of new riders on 600s push too hard because they feel so docile off the line but once in the top end ambition exceeds ability the 848 lets you know a bit earlier in the rev range.
Do you remember the good old days before the internet?

when arguments were only entered into by the physically or intellectually able.

.. for an open road bike, awesome, for a town commuter not really for the reasons previously mentioned.

Hook one up in a series long sweepers & a bit of twisty stuff in the country & you'll not get the grin off his face.
.. and thats Racer # 193 to y'all; my fabulous sponsors (who all do good shit) are: Graeme Fleming IT Consultants, Vision Image, Pacific Safety Wear, Excess Power Equipment, Pro Photo Booth, Canning Vale Travel, Gryphon Garage Doors

.. and according to Sean'o: 'get the Kwaka (never thought i would say that!)'

He really neds to ride one to get the feel of it i.e. seating position, arm/wrist position, he should be OK though as there are lots of older gents on Ducatis Not sure they ride very far though

Ha Ha , not sure they ride far, the gents or the ducaties.
The ride position and all such are for my mate to come to terms with,
The fact the ergs suit taller people is good,
My mate having not spent time on sports toys would not really look these into things as much as most here i suspect,

My only real concern is are they forgiving (that is such a weird word to spell)
For a relative noob, will he be lulled into a false sence of awsomness.
are there any tricks to them.

Also mechanicly, any things of note.

    ...

But in seriousness, its all in the right wrist. If he eases his way into it he will be fine. And agreed the torquey delivery of the v twin is a plus as opposed to peakier in line 4's along with the lesser power of the 848 versus the 1098 may get him into less trouble. If people respect them, I dont think there is any issue starting out on a bigger bike. just get him out there and ride one.

i have had my 848evo since may and love it, went striahgt from a ninja 250 and no problem at all. I also commute to the city on it and it is sweet as. took me about 3 rides to get comfy on it and every time I ride it it feels like a real experience, absolutely love the bike - Best thing I ever did.
I am far from a great rider, but I take it easy and its not a worry at all.

If he has the coin id go the 1198sp has all the fruit,Not making these anymore as new model next year and it may retain its cost better,it all comes down to throttle control ,they are unforgiving but awesome when giving it a go,i do some decent stints out through Bindoon etc ,the seat is slightly uncomfortable and depending upon his height the bars are low ,i am 188cm and way over the 40 yr age group, never had an issue with hot seat but have full Akra Ti ceramic coated, the Tq is awesome down low and a simple mod if he plans on riding around town is to go down 1 tooth on the front
