    Coding new key

    Hi all,

Anybody had any experience in coding a new key for their Duke?

I have a 2008 848 and when I purchased the bike, the seller mentioned that he never received the security card from the original purchaser (who lives in Melbourne). Thus only passing onto me 2 keys.

I have lost one of the keys leaving me with only a spare key to use and no security card.

I contacted Frasers in Perth to see what could be done. They mentioned that they could make a copy if my spare key had a little metal tag on it (presumably with some numbers on it). Which is doesn't. The other 2 options given to me where:

    1) Replace dash and get new security card + 2 keys for the small cost of $2,800.
    2) Find a locksmith to code a new key

Question: has anybody used a locksmith to code a new key and if so, what costs were involved? What is the process involved?

    Please help!

You would have been looking at a new dash, ecu and locks kit for that sort of money. Should have done your research on the bike first before making the purchase.

Thanks rharris, will be paying you a visit tomorrow.

Indeed, $2800 would be for a new dash as I said. When I purchased my bike, I don't usually plan on losing the keys. But unfortunately as with most things Ducati (and other luxury brands) they are always expensive to maintain.

But if you had of asked if it had all the original parts (books etc) you would have found out that you need the code card etc. A simple case of asking questions before purchasing would have prevented this from happening.

$2800 is not a new dash, $2800 is an ecu and locks kit. A new dash would bump it up again.

Hey Richard, thanks for the referral to Diamond Lock & Key. I went next door to the safe place around 12 today, but you weren't in. Anyways, popped next door, got the key cut and coded in about 5mins and $150 less.

Very happy I have 2 keys now.

Onya rharris - I'd + rep ya if I could. Most helpful post I've seen in a long time. I'll be off to visit you & your next door neighbour some time in the near future to get a key cut & coded for the missus' Daytona.

the new ducatis don't have red keys anymore they come with 2 x black keys ,the bikes with lost red keys but at least 1 black key are not a problem to copy and make new code card, bikes with no keys can be sorted allow around $1000
