Differences between a SP ans SPS

Just been trying to find out the differences between the SP and SPS versions of the 916. I know the SP has the 916cc motor and teh SPS the 996. I read that the SPS was built for production racing but the SP was a homologation special for WSB?

    Any feedback appreciated.

After reading the threads about the 99x series of bikes being refurbsihed I think I'm getting a bit of an urge for a Ducati (it's an itch I think I need to scratch)

From what I understand, the SP's came before the SPS's, and had (on top of the normal 916):

    Different cylinder head
    Bigger valves
    Raised compression ratio
    Ti connecting rods
    Uprated clutch assembly
P8 Weber-Marelli system with dual fuel injectors per cylinder (Strada has one per cylinder)
    22hp over Strada
    Ohlin's shock
    Cast iron brake rotors
    Braided steel brake lines
    Carbon fibre silencers
    Carbon fibre body panels

Not sure what of this stuff the SPS had.... The SP was only a 916cc engine though.

I have a "modern Ducati" magazine in the shed which spells it out, but probably no more than what you have listed.

Thought the original SPS was a 955.

    No, I don't believe so.
Ducati never released (to my knowledge) any size engines that weren't in your bog stock range. The 955 is an aftermarket barrel and piston swap for the 916. The SP and SPS (and later the R) bikes were for homologation purposes.
The SPS was also 996cc had Pankl Ti rods, different cams/heads/valves and even different crank cases. It also had a CF airbox and a different frame.
Check here for all the info.
Interestingly, they were only about 3-4 RwHP different from each other, the SPS just had a much "fatter" and more tractable engine.

About 50 955cc 916SP's were made for North America for homologation for AMA Superbike. I think they're known as the 916SPA. As for the difference between a 916SP and a 996SP, it depends on what year(s) you're comparing as they did vary a little bit in spec, an example being in one year the cylinder stud spacings were widened so it could take the 955cc kit. You're correct in thinking that the SP is a 916cc and the SPS is a 996cc. There was also a 916SPS, which is a 996cc. I think SP's and SPS's all had showa forks up until about 2001, when they got the ohlins. They were all built to homologate the bike for FIM WSB (except the SPA which was for AMA).

As for which one to go for, you'll pay more for a later model obviously. There are so few around that it might be a case of taking what you get, in whatever condition you want it to be - you may want an immaculate one or one which needs overhaulin' (depends on what you want to do with it!). Personally, I'd get an immaculate one and I probably wouldn't be fussy about the year (cost vs "newness") but you want one to fix. Be wary of the bikes which get bought over from Japan, I've seen some real stinkers.

    Evil Dwarf,
I'm a big fan of fake spotting. Just wanted to add that the bike at the bottom of your post is likely a bog standard 996/8 posing as an SPS. The reason I say this is because the rims and mirrors are post 2000 and ALL SPSs had full Ohlins during that time (and black mirrors), which that one does not.
So many dudes added the single seat and all the carbon bits to look like the real deal. I hear you can even buy the triple clamp plates these days. They only real way to tell aside from looking at the motor is by the VIN.

Was browsing through bikesales and there were 2 for sale ,one was the fella from WA with one that was around 15k , and the other was yellow[?]. Googling around , I couldn't get a definitive answer on yellow SPS , so is it a possible real unit?
Secondly, price wise , what do 'real' SPS usually turn over for?? Have seen them from 15 -30k , but the spread is all over the shop to get a real indicator of authenticity, condition...

OK so expanding the first question further, after looking around it seems as though the following are around teh same money. Which would you get?
    2001 748R
    1997 916SP
    2000 996

I'd like to get something that I'd ride accoasionally but also has the chance of increasing in value.

It'd be a toss up between the R and the SP.
What condition is the SP in?
    I'd buy the R, but that's just me :p

I'd go the one that Jules linked to. I'd actually seen that one a couple of weeks ago when browsing through Bikesales and I thought it looked like an excellent buy for that money. Bonus is that it's in WA too! There's a yellow one on bikesales which looks like a real hot rod - I'd probably stay clear of it as I like them original, or if modded, able to be reversed back to standard if needs be.
