    Ducati #3

Right now, somewhere between Brisbane and Perth, this sucker is bouncing along in the back of a truck. Hopefully safely crated up.

It's got 11,000 original kays on it. 2001 996S ex Japan, so obviously unregistered. Going to be very happy alongside the 1198S and the 1098R. Need a 999 now?

Whilst it's not going to have a full megabuild done to it, I am going to bring it back to original OEM (new everything that's needed, get rid of that shitty clutch cover for a start).

I also got a very friendly return call from Borgo Panigale telling me the bike was originally yellow (go figure?) so a respray it will likely be.

1 bike at a time mate! The first was the hardest to get past the minister of recreation, they seem to be getting easier now.

The process of ordering all the bits and pieces to bring it back to new/original has started. Wow shit for these is expensive. New radiators are $2000+ alone. I can see this project aint gonna end cheaply....

You won't be jealous of me when I end up sleeping in my shed and pissing over the fence. The missus ain't so impressed with this new purchase as I am...

Ya know, some people like to spread out the collection phase over quite a few years as opposed to quite a few months. That might help with the shed as bed situation too.

Yeah I ended up getting the rad/oil cooler from a seller in the netherlands. A lot cheaper than local/via US internet sites. It's not an oversized/RS radiator, but it'll do. I'm not planning on monster HP from this bike. I want it new/original looking. Sorta.

Must be the first _original_ clutch cover Ducati have sold in quite a while.

    Bike arrived today..

Came crated up really nicely and got a lot of ogling from the guys at the dock...

But then under closer inspection.. Fuck, look at the right hand side of the upper cowel...

The bike has been crashed. Turns out the reason my mate from Italy said it was supposed to be yellow was due to it being dropped and resprayed. The original fairings are in pretty average condition and they've just been sprayed over. There is yellow poking out all over the place and the reverse side of the fairings are showing a lot of repair work.

The lower fairings even had DZUS fasteners missing and were glued (!!) to the top fairings. The headlight/fairing stays were all wobbly and the rims are scratched up to all fuck.

I was quite upset at this point, and I've contacted the QLD dealer that sold me the bike with a 'please explain'. The major service that it's supposed to have? Bullshit. The oil is black, the filters dirty. I can assume the belts haven't been touched either.

There are threaded screws everywhere on the bike and some essential bolts and screws were simply missing completely. Typical abuse and bodged up work by non enthusiasts.

Like I said I was quite depressed when I saw all this, but started stripping the bike to see what I could find underneath.

These bikes are just _amazing_ to work on. A few allan keys and 2 different sized sockets and around half an hour (not kidding) had the bike like this:

    So, the bad:

Bike has clearly been dropped and bogged to flog. Shit paintjob (pricks sprayed the airbox with it still on the bike, there was masking tape still on half the electical cables (!!). Ground right forkleg, bodged up fairings. Radiator fucked, oil cooler even more fucked. Rusty clutch....

    The good:

When stripped of above bits, the bike is VERY clean and tidy. Frame appears ok and the engine is pristine.

I'm not really sure what I've got here. A bike that's barely been used and dropped once, then given to a dodgy QLD bike dealer for a bog and flog - or something that's been treated like shit since the day it came out of Bologna...

I'll know soon when I pull the heads and bottom end apart for a looksee. With any I'll be able to replace all these shit bits and give it some TLC and it'll be a cracker.

Very VERY unimpressed with the QLD dealer, but I'll refrain from posting all the details until I've given them an opportunity to respond. Needless to say, this is not the 'immaculate, recent major serviced bike' they advertised it as.

I wanted a project bike so I'm not overly upset, but I gotta say karma will be coming around to get these guys, particularly if they don't put things right.

Anyway, time to get to work. Ho ho ho!

Wow that's very dissappointing. I feel your pain. If you wanted a crashed bike you wouldn't pay the premium for an "immaculate, recent major service bike". Thats' bullshit, especially from a dealer. Hope you can get things worked out and some $$$$$ compensation your way.

Written to them again this morning, will follow up. From what I can tell the bike is in great _basic_ shape (ie engine and frame are good) but the rest are pretty well in need of replacement.

Would have been ok for a lot less money (A LOT less) as it's a perfect project bike. It's certainly not what was advertised.

I will wait and see what they have to say before I give them a public spray.

I mean FFS the fairings were glued together with selastic. Bolts missing all over the place and it even looked like the airbox had been resprayed whilst still on the bike (electical connectors had masking tape all over them).

And for a bike that's just had a major service, you wouldn't expect the oil that came out of it to be pitch black and gluggy as clotted cream.

Trying to not get angry right now though, so I'll try and keep it positive.
