    Ducati 4 pole starter motor...

Since I did the rebuilt, the ol' girl is a bit hard to turn over. (big bore, high comp pistons , cams, blah blah blah)
Anyhow, I thought I'd have a crack at making a 4 pole starter, hopefully giving a bit more torque to get the engine over the hard bit.
I had a bit of a head start by getting my hands on some laser cut plates and a 3D printed model of the finished product that was an un-finished project.

there was still a few hurdles to overcome, like how do I fix brush holders to the plate, routing the wiring, joining wires ect...

Anyhow, I bought 2 new brush plates and drilled of the brush holders. I then used pop rivets that I cut to length and removed the 'nail' fromup the guts and just used them as a peining rivet.
The wiring was a bit of a drama, I had to solder the brush wire to the plate as well as lengthen the positive so's it would run to the other side. It was all a bit of a squeeze...

So,i finished the job yesterday. Connected the power and it spins ok. I'd like to be able to test it before fitting it to the bike to see if and how much more torque it puts out, but I dunno how I'd go about doing that... I guess I'll just have to mount the starter that I have it fitted to and see what it does. Might take a while because I have a few other thing on me plate and I dont have the time to rip off the alternater cover to fit the starter.

I'll update when the starters on...

Nice job Monsta. I had a 4 pole starter motor on my 916 for a while as she was hard to start but I changed the ign timing on startup which made life easier on her & ended up going back to the 2 pole.

I got it from Pete Smith at Epicycle in NSW. He did a lot of work on the 916 in the late 90's. The 4 pole certainly had more torque for turning the motor over. The reason I took it off was it started to play up after a few years (just normal wear & tear). At the same time I found a problem with the wiring to the ref & sync sensors which was also contributing to the starting issues I was having at the time. When the wiring issue was sorted along with a revised ign map for starting, starting become quite good and the problem was solved. It was just easier in the end to stay with the 2 pole starter motor when the other issues went away.
