    Ducati 916 Strada ADVICE WANTED

Hi guys and Gals need some advice. Im looking at a Strada to buy second hand and would like some feedback on one im looking at.

Its a 916 Strada 1997 with 17,500kms they are asking $10,500 is that a good price or normal for that make/year/model?

Also does anyone know of any dramas this model had?

    Cheers

Thats not a bad price if in not to bad condition.

Make sure you get all the Maintenance records, think these might have had some dramas with rockers flaking as well.

Where is the bike for sale??

Be nice to have it checked out prior to $$$ handover.

Or could end up costing you a fair chunk of $$$....

    +100000.

Be very careful when you buy an old duke. The 996 I just bought as "immaculate" is gonna cost me monster bucks to put right.

Get somebody who really knows what they're looking at to check it right out. Remove all the fairings and look at it and compare against other bikes you know to be good. Something as simple as a new fuel pump will cost you a weeks wages.

Parts (new parts) are VERY expensive and are getting to tougher and tougher to find. You really don't wanna know how much I've spent (So far) putting my 996 right.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's not a great idea, just get ready for a huge spend if it's not been looked after.

not wanting to start a flame war mate, 848's are great, but I wouldn't call that an upgrade - more a side grade...

These bikes are awesome and I'd argue whilst the contemporaries are better on paper - nothing will make you feel like one of these babies does!

if it's a good one, and you end up selling it for an 848, you will cry forever and wished you'd kept it..

On the other hand if it's a turd, you'll probably end up buying a Suzuki. These things will break your heart unless you've got the composure to spend like a sailor in a whorehouse.

Jules is right, an 848 would be a smarter buy in many ways - but there's nothing like these old babies... I love my 1098R to bits, but I still lust over the 916's...

Yes. 916 series will never be repeated. Epic bikes. Desmoquattros are for people who like to inflict self torture and really don't need money to eat and shit...

    My desmo is fine...

    Has never let me down...

Sure it cost Ducati a few dollars for the warranty claims I made...

And sure, I've spent the cost of the bike in go and bling bits...

But I will never sell it...

Yeah they're bloody amazing bikes, but have no false illusions, if you want these things to be right and/or if they've been abused, they will cost you megabucks to put right.

I'd be very wary buying an abused/neglected bike, but an abused Ducati is really asking for trouble. Prices on shit for these old bikes is frightening. Take it from me mate I'm living the dream right now, but I'm not gonna let the bitch break me. I'll see it in bankruptcy court first!

Of course, get a good one (and continue to look after it) and it's a keeper for life. Sell it and you will forever miss it and will always remember 'those old times'....

Shit I wish all my parts would arrive....

PS if it's decent and doesn't need money spent on it, for $10,500 you're already some $20k ahead of where I'm at with my 996. It's a good buy.

History is important though. Pay particular attention to where it was originally registered. If it's come in from overseas, that milage may mean nothing. There's a heap of these bikes floating around that were imported from the UK etc and had their clocks changed over to KM's from Miles.

Looks like it's a local bike though, makes it a lot easier. Check out the dude selling it, if he's a duke nut you'll be right - we're all fucked in the head when it comes to care and attention of our bikes.

Oh and don't read the forums too much, try and get advice from actual owners. You'll do your head in if you start googling problems people have with desmoquattros.

That's the problem with the net.. Great for getting quick info but geeze do things get blown out of proportion... The 'expanding' fuel tank on the 1198 leaps to mind...

i paid $15,500 for my 95 model 916 with 40,000kms but $7500 in receipts for recent work and a lot of spare parts, so your price sounds good but as the others said definitely check maintenance records and get it checked over by a specialist otherwise you could easily have a bill for repairs similar to what was done before i bought mine.

$7500 included a lot of carbon bling but also included battery, fuel pump, clean and seal fuel tank, replace all hoses and belts, 2 new tyres, powdercoat wheels, rebuild brakes and recon forks, new wheel bearings and headstock bearings and the list goes on

you don't buy a 916 because to save money compared to an 848 even with low kms the age says that some parts should be checked out and replaced.
Do you remember the good old days before the internet?

when arguments were only entered into by the physically or intellectually able.

yeah I'm doing similar on mine except I'm buying all brand new parts - that's where it starts to get well expensive.

I stripped mine to pieces the day I bought it and most of it is ending up in the bin. When these things get neglected they really go to the dogs. Plus if you get the mod bug (as most ducati owners do) you'll be in even more trouble haha...

For example, that bike needs to be converted into a monoposto ASAP.
