    Ducati Monsters-General Questions? little help?

    Used Search Function - Check

Puts Flame suit on - Check

Well I have a few questions on Ducati's and in particular Monsters,

as the title states im very keen on getting on one and riding off into the sunset,

I would however like to make sure I get a good deal and try not to buy a lemon?

I have no real prefrence on what model as I like them all but I really need to know what to look out for?

I have researched and come up with 3k-6k as a general rule of thumb for services is this correct?

What are also the most common faults with these models and engines what do I need to watch out for?

What needs to be done on a regular basis so basically what do I need to look out for in the service history?

And are cam belts a big deal if they have been changed like a timing belt on a car?

What KM range is too much?? 40-80K surly they would need a rebiuld at 80K no?

I am sorry for all the questions I just seem to be getting Inconsistent info and would like any advice from people who own them or who have owned them in the past?

    Grazie Tutti

    3k to 6k servicing?

    For what a normal service?

Timing belts are easy, get them done ever 20k or do them yourself, not that hard...

Which models are you looking at?

These are big v twins 100k isn't an issue if they have been serviced, same as Jappers...

Looking for the new style or the original?

2 valve air cooled or one of the 4 valve water cooled ones?

    No they are fine...

The motors are proven for many years...

Servicing is not as bad as people think. It's just you will find you replace clutch plates and timing belts and bits and pieces every service, so it adds to the cost...

Two valvers are great for what you want, I work with a guy who has 72,000 klms on an 01 model 900ie and he reckons it hasn't missed a beat. I had a 96 600 model that I put 54,000 klms in two years on it and it just kept going.

1000 DS motor is the shiz
No great servicing requirements, like Rich said make sure the belts are done every 20,000km or 2 years and regular servicing will nerver hurt
It's better to be thought stupid than open your mouth and remove all doubt

Pure speed in sixth gear on a 5,000 foot straightaway is one thing, but pure speed in third gear on a gravel-strewn, downhill, ess turn is quite another.

The picture there is of a DS motor. You can see the second plug lead going into the belt cover on the horizontal cylinder. Vertical one is hidden by frame / seat.

IMO the 2 valver is a great learner bike i've handed my 1100 to my wife and brother when they were learning after a few months riding 250s, smooth grunt but i'd suggest the 1000 over the 800 in the s2r models, the 800 model is plenty of bike but you will start to feel like you've "mastered it" much sooner which is when you start pushing limits and accidents happen.

i think 3k oil/filter change 6k check the clearances on the older ones but my 2009 model is supposedly 12k for clearances i still go for 3k oil/filter, belts could probably last much longer than suggested but it's cheap insurance to change them every 2 years or 40k.

you can definitely learn to do it yourself and the investment in tools and a manual will be recovered within a few services.

Belts are easy to do, just need a couple of allen keys. Oil change - piece of cake. Valve clearances every so often. Buy a 2 valve air cooled one = no radiator / water pump problems / less maintenance. Less to do, and probably easier, than your 250.

Just remember if you get a newer 4V one, 4 valves = twice the shagging around with clearances etc ( 8 valves in total verses 4 valves in a 2V engine ), and 4V belts are dearer. The good old 2 valvers are bullet proof.

I always struggle to go past the original series of Monster bikes, not a big fan of the new ones. Anyway, when you get one, ride it like this, no excuses

with the DS 2 valve motors, it is a common problem to get condensation build up in the oil if you only go for short rides and dont let the oil get up to 100 degrees.

I was crapping myself when i saw white milky build up in the oil sight glass.
dont be alarmed this is normal and apparently a very common issue if the bikes are only ridden short distances at a time (ie to work and back)
and cos its not water cooled, its not a bad gasket or coolant contamination.

just go for a long ride and get above 100 degrees and then when u get home pop open the oil cap for a few minutes.

thought i'd just add this in here when u start looking around at the 2 valvers and see milky oil

besides that the 2 valvers are pretty built proof, me and a mate did the belt change when i got the bike, oil and filter like others said is piss easy and it starts pretty much first time everytime

plus they have a unique sound compared to the 4 valves, great torque and user friendly.
just remember to keep an eye on the milky oil during colder/winter months

i get that milky oil if i ride the hypermotard to work it's only a 10 to 15 minute ride at most and oil temp on the dash is under 60 degrees, i still change my oil more often to counter it even if warming it up gets rid of the moisture i'm guessing it doesn't do the oil or the engine any good in the long term.

I rented a Diavel and a 696 Monster a couple of weeks back. The 696 looked nice but the lack of power was unbearable.

I get the milky layer on the oil glass in the winter, it goes as soon as the weather warms up.
