Ok well my first day of ducati monster shoping whent somthing like this:

Got down to Fraisers at 9 and had a quick look around, they didnt have much in my price range or style, but they did have a 695 2010 model with termis ecu and bits of carbon all over, it was red with a red frame, I was like yeah it looks awsome but i couldnt afford it till I found out it was $10990 so I was like lets go for a ride,

My first impresions is it didnt sound hard at all? even with the Termis? but oh well it will sound good when I open it up?

So we get on and I felt immediately comfortable however a little forward in the seating position, from there it all went down hill, I hit limiter in every gear as it reved so much faster than my VTR but didnt really accerate that much quicker? so half way round the block I threw it into a corner and it felt good, real good but again lacked so much straight line power it was a joke, So now guys i totaly get what you mean about stay away from the 695 and go for the 1000.

I sadly told the guy it wasnt enough as I felt totaly comfortable and I really wouldnt learn that much more than I have already learnt from my VTR so told them to call me if they get or know of any 1000 monsers that come in and headed to The Honda shop as they had a few there,

Well they had a S2R 1000 that was kinda in my price range, it was black with the baffles taken out by V2 and it had all this tacky crap all over it like a bar type thing at the front of the bike that you can put your feet up and a lambs wool seat cover and a bag rack, all shit that I will just bin asap but I put that aside and took it for a run,

At first I shat myself just standing next to it it is loud and scary! full stop, hoping on it was worse, I took off slowly and it jerked a little with the dry clutch but after a few corners I got used to it, again the sound was amazing I only got into 3rd gear the whole trip but Fuck me this thing moved!!!!

Of the line I gave it a little bit too much throttle and got the front end up about 2 inchs off the ground but it was so smooth not jerky at all as it was more of a power wheelie if that makes sense? I am no expert on wheelies and this was my first but it felt good, so I threw it into a corner and it just stuck there! really nice!

So anyway on the way back I fell in love and was ready to drop my load all over there faces, till I said hang on lets check shit out first, so these are the facts:

    2006 duc S2R 1000cc

    13k

    asking 11.5k

only had 1 service of just oil and adjustments,

So I was like okay and offered them a lowish but cash in had price, as it was on consiment they took it too the owner but he said no and thatsfair enough

But on reflection he may have done me a favour as from what I have read it will need belts, sproket, chain, valve adjustments and so on and that would cost well over a k

But now as you do Im thinking maybe going an extra 500 hundred and geting it?

Happy to hear everyones thoughts on what it will cost to service or if its a good buy and so on, so far it has been fcking exciting! I now see why people love bike shopping!

BTW looking for people to come down to Bunbury for a ride as Im looking at the one at Wayne Pattersons?

Got a link to the Honda shop one? I can't see it on their website??

Belts / sprockets / chain / oil / filter are easy and you can do yourself, or I can help you.

Valve adjustment depends on how confident you are with the spanners, but you also need to have a stack of shims, or work out what you need and go and buy those particular ones. I haven't done a valve adjustment yet, but other people opinions vary from easy to fecken' hard. But I couldn't imagine just a valve check / adjustment costing the earth? Call Pro Twin on Monday for a price??

When are we going to Pattos?

    happy to hear your thoughts?

its looking like I may go this one but still not 100% wish I could just deal direct with the owner as he would take 10 np at all I bet?

Belts and valves are an bit of an ordeal unless you know what you are doing. I've done desmo valves before but decided to pay someone this time round because I'd rather be riding than wrenching. On my Hyper oil, valves, belts and de-dust clutch plates was just over a grand.

I would only ever check the clearances on the dead cat and if they needed doing would take it to the shop unless it was in pieces. Usually took two trips to get the closing clearance correct unless you had a supply of shims. Everything else was done in the shed.

The S2R 1000 is a 2 valve, very easy to do belts on. I understand that 4 valve bikes are a bit harder to do the belts on? I guess I will find out one day if that is true or not.

now you can see why i said a large capacity 2 valve is a good "learner" bike

no good for someone starting from scratch but a great stepping stone machine with thrills to build your skills rather than terrify you into submission, you don't learn anything when you're just holding on

personally i'd go with the one from Patto's since it's been through his workshop, once you meet them and look at how they run things you will know you're getting the better bike.
Do you remember the good old days before the internet?

Hmm there does seem to be a lot of people that speak of certain doom if the valves aren't done. I had a couple of KTM LC4s and checked the clearances religiously every 4,000km. The were spot on every time. After about six checks I figured I must be doing it wrong and took it into the shop to be on the safe side. They said they were spot on.

Rossi did you go down and test ride any other rides?

i know you have your heart set on a Ducati but like i said last night, you most likely going to only keep it for 6months to a year, then upgrade again. Do you really want to stretch your budget?

BTW where was my call this morning? was really keen to give the hyper a test ride today

I'm with filbert, I haven't ridden a Monster 1000 but if its anything like a Hyper is nice and predictable with enough punch to get the sphincter tightened. The 696 was ... just ... sad.

slightly off topic, but im very much considering trading in my 09 R1 for a Hyper. What are they like? From everything i have read/watch they seem to be an awesome bike that you can just have so much fun on? What are they like on the twisty bits?

Well, let me put it this way, Guy Webster lives around the corner from the fantastic 33 out of Ojai, California. He moved there to be near that road because he is a multi-millionaire and can afford any bike he wants (he has over 50 at the moment). He told me that the Hyper is the best of all his bikes for doing the 33.

Is there a particular bike you want to look at Patto's? Its a bit long winded but there is a train service down to Bunbury and I think there is a bus service from Mandurah. I'd shaddow you but buggered if I'm grinding all the way up to Perth on the forrest highway just to turn around and do it again on the way back.

There is train from anywhere along the freeway then bus from Mandurah also a train direct from Perth to Bunbury with westrail which is generally cheaper than driving.

I love my hyper Kaido and my hyper loves the twisties, it's the only bike I've owned that I actually go looking for roundabouts and take the long way home to get the tightest corners, on the drz tard I shortcut and jump everything and the 916 likes sweepers but mostly I ride the hyper

I think you are 100% correct, and after speaking to Wayne today the only diffrences with the two bike are 10hp, 3 years and slightly diffrent looks, the one at Patto's is fully serviced however and would not cost me much at the start as its had all the belts done, its just a shame its so far away and the whole shadow thing will take some organising to get it back up to Perth

but I wont deny it im leaning more towards the Black S2R like that dirty smoking hot girl you dont want to take home to meet the Famila but you cant stop banging her even though she is really banging you, it will all end in tears but you just cant help it....lol

went too far didint I?? lol
