    First 1198 Mod...

    Hi Guys..

I've had my 1198S for about 4 months now, and have so far held off on performing any mods...

Well that came to an end this weekend with the install of the open clutch cover. No doubt this'll open the floodgates to future mods.

The bike was absolutely great to work on. You really get a feel for quality when you pull the fairings off and look inside. Everything fits together just so nicely..

It was only supposed to be a half hour job, but I turned it into half an afternoon... Half the bike was apart before I'd had enough and decided to start putting it all back together again....

    Anyway here's some pics...

    Future Ducati man!

The greatest surprise was the ability to 'shim' the Ducati Performance pressure plate to 'street' stiffness. One of the things that always shitted me to tears was the stiffness of the clutch (an hour in traffic and you've had enough for a few weeks). Well, with the DP pressure plate, the instructions tell you how to install 2mm shims in between the cups/springs and the pressure plate. This simple mod (which took all of 2 seconds per spring) reduced the strength you need to pull that clutch in by at least 50%.

The tech specs of the pressure plate do warn you that this is a 'street' mod, and that the amount of pressure on the plate would be reduced by the addition of the shims - somewhere around the tune of 10kg of pressure on the plate. This should be fine for street use...

I thought I'd drop that note, as there's a lot of people out there upgrading needlessly to the larger 30mm clutch slave cyl. That simple mod seemed to make it all that much more pleasant for my piss weak wrists....

    Anyway there she is.....

The noise it makes would wake the dead. I guess I'll have to get termis to drown out the noise!

It's been on some really nice tours of the south west.... There's some roads down there man, I tell ya...

Street riding/around town not so much. These things are pretty crap for commuting. It's more of a weekend thing.

I never tire of seeing these bikes.

Did a good job with that clutch cover. I'm not a fan of them in concept (always had a fear of shit getting stuck into the moving parts there, then again I ride streets / country roads fairly reguarily) but I have to admit that looks spectucular with the bike.

    Nicely done!

Do yourself a favour and go on Ebay.com and buy a Deuz kit from Kurvygurl and that gets rid of all the screws holding the panels on ,saves heaps of time and still looks good
Not sure how a 2mm shim under the cup would make it easier,in theory that should place more spring pressure on your clutch
    Nice lookin Scoot

after taking out the 1198 for a demo ride on saturday, i would have thought the first mod was fitting better wider set mirrors, Fuck, If i thought the Tornado's mirrors were bad, boy was i mistaken!, how in the hell they ever let that make it past adr's has got me beat.

Streetfighter was a top bike to ride, except for the headlight, which is soooooooo butt ugly.

its a really nice bike, I was gonna do a impression write up on it and the streetfighter when i get the time.
I didnt get out 4th on her, we did a group ride up reid hwy, didnt get to crack her right open but apart from the heat it sends out in urban riding id have it in a heartbeat. sounds good with the termi's. i thought the display pretty poor, no dial tacho and the lcd numerals are to thin font wise. good ride possie though. the tornado's definately more race rep.
    appreciated the lighter clutch ;-).

I may look into trading to a 848/1098/1198 but thats depends on what trade in i may get

The theory has me scratching my head too.

The shims essentially mean the springs don't travel as far in a full activation, yet you still get the same amount of leverage on the clutch lever.

Somebody who knows more about physics than I do could probably figure it out... I got a D in high school maths...

Since I changed the springs AND the shims at the same time, I don't know how much of the change was the new springs or the shims, but the change most certainly made the clutch a lot easier to live with. It feels more like a Jap 600 now.

The instructions that came along with the kit show different spring/shim combinations and how much pressure is exerted on the clutch. With the shims in place its about 10kg less (97kg vs 110kg without the shims, if I recall), but it provides a softer clutch. Presumably this means the clutch will start to slip earlier than it would with the extra pressure on it, but meh - I can live with that.

You can get extension stalks for them, but what's the point. They vibrate so much you can't see a lot anyway!
