    Pipe upgrade for the 1198

I've been reading and like everything this topic seems to spark a debate on which way you should go. My 1198 is as stock as it comes out of the box and I plan to change that but I'd like opinions on the best direction to go.

I plan on changing the exhaust but should I get slip on or replace the whole system, is it worth it? Obviously I'm looking for performance but the noise is probably more important, I want it to sound right.... and loud

As the bike is new is it better to get the exhaust now or wait until things are worn in a little. Is it worth buying the kit with ECU or not and looking for something different like power commander etc.

Finally should I go for the Termi or is there something that looks, sounds and performs better?

So that is a can of worms, let the flaming begin

Termignoni seem to have a captive market when it comes to Ducati pipes, for some reason they add over 500 moar awesomes*

Personally I think Leo's sound better and lets face it, if you're that skilled that you're going to be reaching the performance limit of an 1198 you will have other priorities ahead of exhaust choice like suspension, ECU, rearsets, etc..

Go with slipons and open clutch cover if you like to pose. If you like to have a light wallet, go the full system and ECU.

*This is a subjective measurement and should not be referenced to by anyone at any time for any reason

    Pretty much what he said..

The slip-ons will sound very similar to the full system - trust me they are MORE than loud enough especially if you pull out the baffles.

Oh and the slip-ons also come with a replacement ECU.

Keep the baffles in if you want a sedate sound, or out if you want it to be heard suburbs away. Just remember to have the idle mixture set/TPS reset one way or another, it can screw with your fuelling if you pull out the baffles after it's been adjusted etc.

Power differences are minimal and academic. The extra 5hp or so on the top end is traded off lower down and frankly it's unlikely you'll ever tap them anyway.

How about being different by keeping it standard, Every man and his dog puts exhausts and all manner of shiny / loud stuff on them as soon as they get it home, so you could be different ( and richer ) but not "following the crowd". Just putting it out there...............

Can you not rip the guts out of the standard pipes to get the sound without the $2000 ( or how ever much they are ) bill?? There must be heaps of stock pipes hanging in people's garages they don't want...................... bit of Saturday morning DIY with drill / dremel / file = lots of noise out of your bike

I know most people go for the Termi's but would like to see some dooks with Akrapovic systems on them.... like this

Funny enough, I was just talking to my friend about that. Our speedometer has melted and as a result it's very hard to see with any degree of accuracy exactly how fast we were going.

Leo Vince, Zard, Arrow. There are heaps of options out there.

eMoto - Ducati 1098 Exhaust Systems & Silencers I know this link it for 1098's but it shows you how much variety there actually is.

I would suggest the Akras are probably a better quality pipe, but there's something so wrong about not putting termis on a duke.. It's like peas and carrots, they just go together..

Or yes, keeping them standard... Nothing wrong with that either..

I wouldn't personally go with any other brand, but whatever makes you happy, it's all good mate!

You don't get the ECU though, right?

Would need a PC5 or something along those lines.

    Termi's I say....

    Or

    Stock is good.

Walking around with your cock hanging out is being different, doesn't make it a good idea though!

Gutsy question. You're a shark. Sharks are winners, and they don't look back because they have no necks. Necks are for sheep.

Depends on what you plan on doing with the bike and how much you want to spend really.. i had a full Zard system on my 1098s, is a great system, well built, nicely finished and made for mid range power more than top end, which is what you will get with a full Termi system... did a lot of homework on exhausts over the past few years, and can say that most systems are designed for max top end power.. Zard is one of the exceptions.. they are about rideability, unless you opt for the full Ti SBK systems which are race pipes...

When i got my 1198s i put some 1098R Ti cans i had cored on until i decided what system i wanted.. then found an Akra Ti system at a good price and went that way.. difference being mid range, again the Akra is designed for top end, so think about what you really want .. if you ride on the street /road with an occasional track day, then slip ons or a system that offers mid range, if you track a lot or want to race, then go full system and use another ECU like a Microtec with a custom map.. i still have the 1098R slip ons if you are interested, have a minor scrape on them from my highside but otherwise ok .. PM me

I would say I won't be pushing this bike to the limiter every time I ride, I'm no racer that is for sure.

It will be more for street and maybe the occasional track day, so by that logic the systems like Zard would suit best with the more mid range gain?

    Hi Jimmy

Yes, that or Slip Ons will give you noise and still retain some mid range for street riding, have seen guys get the OEM headers polished or ceramic coated with the welds cleaned up and they look quite good.. depends on your preferences.. as a rule the bigger diameter headers and collectors the less mid range you are going to retain..

PM me if you want some pricing on systems or slip ons.
