Thinking about trading the R1 for an RSV4R

    Hey,

For awhile now i have been thinking about trading in my R1 for an Aprilia RSV4R. Anyone here made the jump from a Japanese superbike to an Italian superbike? how did you find it?

Read lots of reviews on the aprilia and everyone seems to love it

edit: R1 is 09 if that matters

    Don't do it!
or go ahead and do it, it's your life.

It won't be as reliable or comfortable as your bike, it will have quirks, it's up to you to decide if the pros outweigh the cons.
In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

ride one, then give us your opinions on it instead of reading other peoples
Men have motorcycles while women have mensutral cycles, you can't talk to either while they are on it. The women's also has a sound, it goes nag-na-nag-nag-nag, biiiiiitch-bitch-biiiiiiiitch!

is reliable and maintenance that big of a difference to a Japanese bike? I do 99% of my car/bike maintenance myself and after reading some of the post here on psb i think its a good idea i do the maintenance myself rather then send it to the Aprilia dealership.

interested to know what the cost of a service on an Aprilia is?

in these days of forums etc you can pretty much your own servicing bar valve work if thats beyond your league, strip it down and have a mob mech come round to valve work, and tada, cheap servicing :-)

With the normal jump from a Japanese sports bike to an Italian bike it's also making the jump from an I4 to a V or L twin. You usually go strongly either way as they're so different to each other. But from a cross plane I4, which apes a V4, to a real V4 - I'm wondering how different they'd be! Crank phasing and firing intervals will make the biggest difference and I don't know how similar or different they are to each other. I've not ridden either but I did own a VFR750FL years ago, which was a V4 but it would be quite different to the R1 and RSV4!

Don't click here to see my ZX9R aka The Ginger Ninja... there's no link!

The RSV4 is about the only bike I would consider trading/selling my SP1 for . . .for what thats worth.

Dunno how you would classify your riding skill however being a general numpty on a bike, I found that the Jap bike was smoother and more 'refined'.[read comfortable riding position]

Once on the wog bike , I did find it pretty aggressive 'bar wise and harder all round. Being a twin, I found the noise and feeling of it more than worth the sacrifice. So much so that I generally only look to twins nowdays. [but the Bennelli TnT gets me moist ].

The RSV4 is meant to be pretty hard and unforgiving as well [according to the forum opinions] , but with the V4 it is a different beast.

Haven't stepped over one as yet personally, but it's how the bike makes you feel once saddled up and on the gas that is the clincher. Like a new pair of boots, you just get used to it and it becomes the norm for you.

May as well grab one and own it for a while. I you like it keep it, but if not there are more than a few R1's for sale to replace the ol' girl! [unless it is the SP1 ]

When I bought my RSV4, I was jumping between the S1000RR & the RSV4, a few things that swayed my decision were the RSV4 delivers the power at a lower rev range which I found more street friendly & being a short arse found the more compact setup more comfy (but the seat height is higher).
If after sales service Is what your after, Auto Classic Is second to none, (in my experience) although the Aprilia Importers (John Sample Group) are good, the local agent Isn't worth a drop of Dog Shit when It comes to Customer Service.
Best thing to do Is take them both for a ride, & If you prefer the Beemer, go see Auto Classics, or If the Aprilia tickles your fancy, approach one of the Eastern State Dealers & you'll probably get a better deal than locally.

    thanks guys

was hoping to get to sit on one at the perth bike show but no aprilia on display

one of my main issue with the R1 is the amount of heat that the undertail exhaust produces while riding in traffic or at slowish speed (60km/hr).. from what i have read the RSV4R is similar.. anyone comment on this?

Ride one first before deciding, if using for town use you will notice the heat on the left leg, you think its trying to cook you! As Optimal said, talk to eastern states dealers. I couldn't get 1 in WA when I wanted to buy, Dealt with A1 motorcycles in Vic and because I couldnt register in Vic they delivered it to the door for the same price, I just had to reg + stamp duty in WA which was around $800 for a new RSV4R. Was still cheeper than a demo at RG i missed out on. I have since brought another (used) over from east and used Furgusons transport, they picked up and delivered to door for $920. less if you pick up from depot.
