World champion Troy Bayliss snatched provisional pole position for Phillip Island’s World Superbike double header as rain stopped play in second qualifying.
Bayliss, 37, who is racing at his home this weekend, took his Ducati around the Australian circuit in 1:31.887 to wrest the top spot from Britain's James Toseland by 0.153 seconds.
The Ten Kate Honda looked set to improve his time, but the onset of rain just minutes after Bayliss set his time, meant that the grid order was set there and then, and his pace-setting time from Friday was still good enough for second on the provisional grid.
Seven-time Phillip Island winner Troy Corser improved to third on his Motor Italia Yamaha, knocking Fonsi Nieto's PSG-1 Kawasaki back a place.
Lorenzo Lanzi was fifth on the second Ducati despite not improving his time, but still held onto the place ahead of joint championship leader Max Biaggi.
Max Neukirchner (Suzuki Germany), Noriyuki Haga (Motor Italia Yamaha), Yukio Kagayama (Alstare Suzuki) and Ruben Xaus (Sterilgada Ducati) completed the top ten.
Kagayama had already been ruled out for the rest of the weekend after breaking his collarbone and puncturing his spleen in a crash on Friday.
That should have meant Karl Muggeridge, who was 17th fastest overall, moving up a spot and into Superpole, but the Australian suffered a high-speed accident of his own that left him in no fit state to ride again today.
His Alto Evolution Honda squad - who also saw Josh Brookes stop when his engine torched itself - were unable to say whether he would be able to race on Sunday.
