It'll be interesting to see how it goes with no control engine like Moto2.

Will the major manufacturers go overboard to develop 250cc engines???

Will this technology roll onto the noob 250 market???

Agreed Krusty, I wonder if variable valve timing, variable intakes and the like will make their way onto these mad singles.

Almost certainly not as Moto3 will have a spec. ECU and electronics package supplied by Dorna.

My 2 stroke Victa lawnmower will be faster and have more HP than those contraptions.
Never mind the costs of rebuilding those handgrenades all the time.

I would expect a flow on of technology. With these having to justify their place against the 125's expect everything on these motors and then some. As the moto 2 and moto 3 classes are supposed to be representative of the market sales expect a real 250 ninja, new 250 fireblade and mabey a baby ducati. Time will tell!

Honda NRS250 Teased – The Moto3 Racer Cometh

    CBR250R in a dress?

Also from elsewhere on that site (death of 2 strokes article)

From the 81mm bore size, we can also surmise a trend in GP racing. As Moto2 is one year into a three year contract with Honda as the sole-engine provider, the assumption goes that Moto2 racing could see a 500cc, 81mm, two-cylinder format in 2013 as well. This would likely help manufacturers consolidate their development costs across the class, and could even lead to some interesting cross-series technologies.
This makes sense. I've been saying as much 18 months ago.

3 classes, double capacity for each step up by doubling number of pistons.

conrods, valves, pistons (and potentially cylinder heads, cams, cylinders if you go for inline twin and V4), etc are potentially all interchangeable, and made on the same production line (like the old 125-250-500 smokers could have been made).... THAT is how you cut costs, not by randomly changing rules every 12 months.

In day's of old that was how development was done in Euro racing 2 stroke land.
50cc was seen as a testing mule and applied to 125 which in turn was transferred to 250/350cc and adapted to the 500cc class.
    Nothing new at all.
Cosworth did it as well with technology from their F1 engine, sliced a V8 down to a 2 cilinder?? for Norton and other GP wannabee's
