I have seen this footage from another angle (Faster DVD) and to me it looks like he is trying to push the bike up with his knee, this one not so much.
What do you think? (At 1:14)

It looked like he tried but his knee grabbed/slipped/grabbed and he was gone.

He said he tried to save it a couple of times untill he realised that it was to far gone but he was pissed as he was miles out in front.
