Qualifying - What's the difference between 'P' and 'Pit'

Next to the riders' names, it will at times have one or the other.

I was under the impression that 'P' meant they were in the pits.
But often, you will also see it written in full as well.

Is there a difference between the two or is it to explain what 'P' means at the same time?
If so, why not write them all that way?

Maybe introduced after Rossi's recent comments re: soft cock GP riders, the "P" may indicate a lap by a pussy?

Seriously though, wouldnt have a clue, was thinking the same myself.

When they first enter the pits it shows "pit" then shortly afterwards it changes to a "P".

Good session last night, great to see Edwards back out there so soon after busting a collarbone.
