You'll get used to just circulating in 14th place this year, it seems Stoner really was that good doesn't it ?
You can always fall back on the "still recovering from a hurty shoulder" routing like you have been even though Pedrosa was back racing (competitively) a few weeks after breaking his colarbone in 3 places.
But at the end of the day you'll be making a squillion in sponsorship and appearance money running with the Italian rider / bike combination at the end of your career as planned.

At this point in time, I think Rossi knows he may never win another championship. The increased status alone from riding an Italian machine could very much outweigh another championship win in his mind.
