    Lap timers?

I've done a few trackdays now and last time out I was running round with one of the coaches (sorry forget his name) and he followed me for a good 5 or so laps in the final session. I asked him what times we were doing given he was with me on track and had a lap timer on his bike. This gave me a decent idea of my times but was wondering what are some reliable/accurate ways to get your lap times? I use my road bike (K8 GSXR1000) which doesn't have a lap timer. Any one have some ideas that I could try out??
    Cheers

What is your reason for getting a lap timer? Are you interested in Racing? I'd suggest unless you want to race, ignore your laptimes.

However if you have to know, there are a few different apps available for iphones & android phones which will allow you to get laptimes, or cheap IR laptimers available.

I have Harrys Laptimer for the iPhone, although I'm yet to test it out. I was going to do this first on the road rather than have to worry about figuring it out on a track day.
Although not yet interested in racing I figured that getting consistent lap times (whatever the speed) would show that I was getting the lines and breaking points sussed. I could then look at gradually improving something such as body position, or breaking points and watch to see if the times started to come down. So I was going to use the lap times as a learning tool.
I realise that a bit of discipline is needed not to just target fast times first, but thought this was a reasonable approach. Is this not correct?

Edit- I realise that consistent times could mean I am consistently doing something wrong, but this is where the instructors would come in. Hopefully any correction suggested would result in an increase in consistency or a decrease in lap times if implemented correctly.

Mate I've got RACE CHRONO GPS lap timer and it is unreal the data iyt spits out but it did cost 500bucks. I bought it because I want to keep getting better and maybe race one day. I recommend this product as it gives so much info like speed at every point along the track on every lap of the session gives you average/top speeds/ bes/ worst lap times and you can put it on your computer to compare all your sessions. I think it was off ROOST INDUSTRIES.com.au

Come on bh2wheels why would you wanna know your lap time idiot. It's like at the drags; you just ignore your lap times and focus on what you have to do and just estimate at the end of the drag strip to .000000000000000000000 of a second what time you ran. What a stupid question pfft.

    Great first post, ya dick!

At the drags... Riding better can only result in a lower et.

At the track, there are many more important things to focus on other than your lap time. A few of my fast laps have been laps I would never hope to see repeated, but as a racer, I need to know the result, at the end of the day, fast is fast. As a Trackdayz rider though, it's about smooth, consistent, safe, fun... Who gives a shut If it's a 62 or a 65... A lap timer is use full if you care about 60.85 vs 60.92... Etc
    season 2012 is coming.....

Lap timers are great but I don't look at mine while out on track nor do I concern myself with trying to beat my previous times. I keep focused on riding and then using the timer after the session to see if what I've been working on improving is paying off or not.

If your looking for a good lap timer that won't break the bank, we are running a special. It comes with the receiver, beacon (AIM XT compatible) and shipping for $49.99 USD!

Can you connect up an external battery/power supply to the beacon?

The beacon / transmitter runs on (2) AA batteries only, I use an Energizer Lithium battery and get between 3-4 hours.

Most days, I use the receiver only becuase the track puts out their only beacon and since the receiver is compatible you can use the one provided. If for some reason they forget to put one out, you can still get your times!

At $49.99 usd shipped, the receiver by itself is a solid deal.

    Safe riding!

96... us mug riders just love lap times and seeing if we are improving or not. Suprizingly (to us) it is not the lap when you where pushing hard and all swetty palms that was your quick lap.
Helps to know that to learn to be calm and smooth.
I have use Iphone aps.... Harries lap timer, with out succsess and CMS laptimer which I love (Free and payed version avalable) and Deablo (which is made by perelli and free)also good.
GPS basede lap timers are dependent on the quality of the gps signall and so are not where near as accurate as beacon based lap timers. Still OK for us mugs to get an idea though.
Enjoy your track time bh it can get adictive.

If you're a regular track day rider or racer I'd recommend a lap timer as it's a great training aid. The whole point is to be able get around the track quickly without being ragged, dangerous or scaring the living daylights out of yourself and others.

The on board lap timing with instant feedback is the way to improve. And always put the beacon ... or set the start/finish line if it's a GPS unit ... at the beginning of the straight. That way you've got time to check out the time and think about what was different to give you a faster or slower time.

I use a Qstars GPS which is very accurate. Will be organising a group buy soon if people are interested. can also provide support for setup and application at the track if you require.
