    Looking for a mentor

As the title states, I'm looking for someone who would be interested in teaching a young dog a few tricks at the track, also maintain/work on our bikes together etc. preferably located south, around Canning Vale area but doesn't really matter.

I moved to Perth from NZ a couple of years ago where I did a number of track days, I've got about 10 track days under my belt now and find myself very comfortable running with the fastest guys (usually the fastest) in the intermediate-fast trackday group (this is not fast, I know!). I've come to a point where I've read a lot of online material IE superbike school etc.. to try improve my riding skills, but there are some areas where my technique is terrible and needs improvement. I believe some guidance will point me in the right direction and allow me to learn a lot faster.

Practice makes perfect and more experience at the track will no doubt help, but if there is someone out there with some racing experience who would enjoy mentoring a keen fella, please let me know. I am most interested at becoming more comfortable on my bike and improving technique, speed/lap times are simply a result of riding well. In return I'm happy to lend a spare pair of hands (detailed and mechanically minded, but not that skilled) to work on your bike and offer some good company

It would be also good to get to know a few more people in the track/racing community here in Perth.

    Cheers,
    John 0430 627 834

Hi John, Not sure if you have the money for this - but have you considered getting a track bike? Cheapies can be had from 5-6k if you look in the classifieds on Welcome to the Motor Cycle Racing Club of WA

Why do I mention this? because this means you can get your race licence, which means it will open you up to $70 tuning sessions with the racers provided your bike meets race specifications (race fairings / no lights / wire ties etc). Which means you will definitely not be the fastest guy out there any more and you will be pitted next to many of the racers and most of them are nice enough to let you get a tow every now and then.

Besides that - stick to level 3 Racecraft sessions, I have found they are the most helpful (have had some good instruction from the trakdayz guys - but mainly in the slower classes). Also get out there as frequently as possible - you will usually lose the gains you make if you dont go around once a month.

If you become a regular Racecraft or Trakdayz entrant you'll find some experienced people there who will be happy to give you some guidance.

Bah ya never lose it I work away and don't get to the track every month but manage to beat PB's everytime I get down there (although now I'm at 62.31 I can't see records every time
    I get there)

Also is a race bike necessary for doing your license I think I've seen a cpl of guys do it on their streeter (def not the best option tho).

As well as that I don't think I've met a single person at the track who wouldn't answer a question or help another rider out in anyway they can (eg. Knowledge, nuts bolts, tyre pump, pressure gauge, helping get the bike to follow the regulation stuff)

Best thing you could do is book with MCRC as this is the racer preferred one (coz we get it cheaper) so you can catch up with racers in group 4 and the coaching is done by people who race for all other levels.

You maybe surprised how good and easy to talk to some of the guys are

You can get your license on a streeter - I have done it myself - havent handed in the paperwork +$300ish though as you cant get into the tuning sessions on a streeter... I am not changing the daily into a racebike - esp as it's a 636 and it's pointless to race one against the thousands if I ever head that way.

    Toughen up........

Possum - I'm actually racing your old R6 in this year’s round. It’s been a steep learning curve and I still have a long way to go, but if you see me at the track come and say hi. I'd be happy to give you a tow around barbs as long as you aren’t already quicker than me!

haha nice, she still going strong by the sounds of it.. miss that bike!

I've got my first day on the new bike (600) on the 16th with champions, it'll be interesting to compare my R1 times. I'll be registering with MCRC soon so I'll keep an eye out for you.

i'll be there on the 16th, not saying i'll be able to teach you anything but hit me up on the day and i'll strap the camera on my bike and follow you around for a bit (if I can keep up) so you can have a look for yourself and see what your doing right/wrong. If your keen.

(if were in the same group I suppose)
