Ill try make this brief, I have a Aprilia Rs-250 and i have had the taste of road racing and would like to pursue it further more. OK here is my dilemma.

    I want to race competitively:
There is a Formula Two Class at Barbagallo where my bike is eligible, Has any body witnessed this event?
are there many bikes that compete or is it kinda a novelty like sidecar racing? (haha jk)

My bike is worth roughly 8grand, its road reg'd, insured and has done 15,000 k's:
Should i just race (learn to race) my bike this year, rebuild it at the end of the year, sell and upgrade?
am i better off selling it now before its thrashed and needs a rebuild and buy a 600 racebike for roughly the same price?
would it be a surer foot in with a 600 racebike?
    can i get a decent 600 for around 8grand?

    please consider:
i am an apprentice and money is not abundant.
i dont care about the fact i might not have a road bike any more.
i have a bike trailer already.

    all input is welcome.
    Ta Owen.

Ok...for starters I think there were around about a dozen or so starters at most rounds but with the introduction of the SV 650's I think the Formula 2 class is hoping for more starters this year. Don't forget you can also go in the 3 clubman races so there is potential to go in 6 events at each round. Check the results for the class for last year to see how many starters there were @ http://www.natsoft.biz/cgi-bin/results.cgi?2006 It might be a good idea to talk to a few of the guys racing in this class at a tuning day as they are always keen for new racers in the class and will be more than helpfull.

Tough question as to whether to go for the 600 or race your 250. You'd definately get a half decent race ready bike for $8K. There are a few early 2000's R6's around at the moment for sale. With your Aprilia you may need to buy race fairing etc etc so it may be a cheaper option to sell and buy a 250 or 600 ready to race.

All in all its a tought decision to make but as long as you get yourself out on the track racing I'm sure you'll have no regrets.

If i were in your shoes I'd be seriously looking at selling your 250 and buying a 600 track bike.

It's scary how easily you can spend big money getting your bike up to track spec. It would be cheapest to buy a 2nd hand 600 that already had the work done rather than convert your current road bike. You can get a very decent track bike for 8 grand, with everything you need

either that or buy another 250 if you wanna race two smoker.

I don't know what your racecraft is like so assuming you are pretty new to racing and track riding I'd say do as many trackdays as you can on your current bike.
Also have a look around the track and have a chat to people to suss out more about the whole racing thing (everyone is more than happy answer any questions you have and give you a hand if you need) there is also plenty of racers on this forum too so ask away.
And then when you think you are ready (money and confidence wise) make a decision.
Fast, cheap & reliable ... pick any two.

Just bought me a 03 Kwaka ZX6RR (ex Team Kawasaki) fully prepped for the track for $7k (with spares), damn but its fun & on the first sess at the track I'm 7 secs a lap faster than on me Duc.

So far its all the extras that add up. Race stands, tyre warmers, lap timer, new helmet, full leathers, trailer, towbar, etc.

Shoulda done this 25 years ago so I'd highly recommend it. I'm gonna do track/tuning days for the first part of the year & once I'm thoroughly happy on/with the bike actually do some real racing.
.. and thats Racer # 193 to y'all; my fabulous sponsors (who all do good shit) are: Graeme Fleming IT Consultants, Vision Image, Pacific Safety Wear, Excess Power Equipment, Pro Photo Booth, Canning Vale Travel, Gryphon Garage Doors

.. and according to Sean'o: 'get the Kwaka (never thought i would say that!)'

I would sell the RS250 and get a decent 600. You will need to spend money into that 2 stroke to keep it going for track use. WOT most of the time takes its toll on 2 strokes. On a 600 you wont need to open the engine up.

Do you have a car ? and a trailer ? . As Smeg says, you need such items, and the money adds up aside of the fact you have a bike.

I dont have one now, but in the past ive had "racing buddies" where you have a mate you split it down the line with. You buy a trailer, and split fuel bills, what one has , the other hasnt and you have by default etc etc. Works out a lot cheaper , especially since my race buddy lived 4 streets away.

    Perhaps look into that.
