    Rivet link required for racing?

Hi all, I was just wondering whether a rivet link is required for racing (in F2 class) or not. I have found mention of it in a couple of places on the net, but I spent quite a while looking through the GCRs and couldn't find anything. I recall seeing something ages ago that said that if the bike was higher than XXXcc capacity it needed one?

I am currently in the position where the chain on my bike is a dirt bike chain installed with the clip link in the wrong direction and I can't get a rivet link for it as they don't make them. So I need to either replace it with a clip link in the correct direction or replace the whole chain. I think the chain is still pretty new, so would prefer to keep it if possible. The bike is an RGV250 (not sure if that matters?).

I'd suggest you should change it to a rivet link for your own, as well as everyone else's safety. However you are correct that there is no mention of this requirement in the GCR's.

oh and correcting direction is as simple as removing the clip and reinstalling.

Recommend to buy a new clip though(comes with the single linkage bit as well) - they're $5-10 at most bike shops

edit: this is only if you wish to use the clip. Recommend rivet for racing though.

As per usual, it's up to the scritineers discretion. No rule, but the always check and/or ask if you have an endless chain.

If you run a chain with a link, put a bit of lock wire aroun the link that has the clip on it. This stops the clip from opening, and coming off.

Can you show pic of how you can achieve this?

I can't see how this can be done - there is not enough space on the end of the pin for lockwire once the clip is on, and you can't wrap it around the chain either(obviously)

Can't draw pics on the iPhone, but...

The clip is on one of the 'outer' plates. Each end of that plate, sits on the inner plates. These inner plates are what but up against the sprockets.

This leaves a gap between the sprocket and the outer plate, the thickness of the inner plates (plus o/x rings) where you can loop the wire through.

Just make sure it's tight, so it does actually prevent the clip opening, and the wire catching the sprockets.

I think I might just replace the chain with a rivet link one then if it is going to be safer and then won't have to worry about scrutineering. I already have a new clip ordered for the dirtbike chain, so I will just keep that one as a spare or stick it on a roadbike.

Best for everyone concerned... if in doubt change it out.

You make no friends at the track when you throw a chain, rip you engine open, cover the track in oil and water and bring down the rest of the field.

    Risk of racing Turbs :p

But you can mitigate the risk by using a rivet

I don't and won't use one racing, but I'm racing Supermoto Might try Aaiden's suggestion though

whilst i wish i could agree robin, they state in the riders breifing every race day that; "other may ride dangerously, or with a lack of skill"

that applies to preparation before the day as well, although the scrutineer is there to minimize the risk of an under prepared bike entering the track.

I could comment how Lyle did a fucked job of riveting his chain, causing it to come off, destroy something and dump oil all the way down the hill to turn 7, which caused me to test the sand trap...

But then I have dumped a sump full of oil on the start finish straight, so who am I to throw stones...

and even if you have a great chain, it doesnt stop a certain someone over revving his bike on the down change (lap after lap) and sending a rod through the cases dumping oil and dropping (i think) 4 bikes.

Sorry, my point being that those at the track 'generally' have a higher appreciation for getting things right... pushing things to the limit is all well and good, and is the whole point of us being out there... but when you knowingly take something to the track which will struggle to not shake itself to pieces idling down the pits, it would be better for everyone concerned if you would just crash on Joondalup Drive on your way to the track.

If the chain on your F2 RGV250 is still new, there's no need to replace it as yet : do what Aaiden suggests, and merely re-fit the safety clip with the round nosed end going in the direction of chain travel. If it's a motocross chain though, may well be worth considering a new one : certainly no need for a big hefty o-ring chain on a 250 track bike, needless waaste of horsepower. A nice, slinky 520 chain with an x-ring is plenty.

You are supposed to lock wire the link on.... but there is no room to do so if you use the clip...
If you install the clip so it "swims upstream" it should be ok....
