    250cc's for R-E

    Hey all first time post,
lurking around the forums for a while just taking a bit in before I buy anything, but i passed my test today so I thought it was about time to make sure...
I did find a list a while ago but can't seem to find it again, is the R-E open to all 250's or are there a few (e.g rs250's and the like) that you can only have on your open?
Thanks to anyone that helps out

If it's 250cc or under you can ride it...

That is if you are in WA...

    Congrats on passing your test.
You can now ride anything with an engine capacity not exceeding 250cc.

If your keen to know what type of 250 to get, well, this thread will get whored to the max...

    meh, i'll start!

The VTR 250 is your best bet for a reliable easy to ride 250, that has enough 'go' in it to have some fun. A good amount of low end torque for a 250 with an upright seating position making for easy learning and a comfortable ride.

As far as i know the RS 250 is an open class bike only as it exceeds power to weight ratios for the RE class, the RS125 however you can ride. This is because the RS250 is a two stroke and makes more power than a 4 stroke 250.

    Welcome and congrats

Pretty sure 250 strokers are ok on RE's? Correct me if otherwise

Sorry mate, but that's not correct.

You can have any bike, as long as it's under 250cc. So you can have a 60 horsepower 2-stroke RGV or RS250. Power to weight considerations don't apply here yet.

You might be thinking of the proposed LAMS laws, which will allow bikes up to 660cc, and judge them on power to weight (and also ban most 250cc 2-storkes).
In life you only get one lap, might as well make it a good one.

I was under the impression that as long as its under 250cc it's all good.

Get an RD250 and bore it out. Then let me borrow it. Do iittttttt.

Ah cheers for clearing that up mate. I thought we ran on power/weight ratios, my bad!

Welcome and congrats on passing your test.
Went through the buying my first bike myself a few months ago. I just spent some time looking around at what was available, Read and watched some reviews from various places and made my decision from there. Started with what style of bike look of, Full fairing, Naked, Cruiser, Fighter etc and worked from there.

    Hope this helps a bit

Congrats on passing the test. Must be an awesome feeling
As mentioned above, power/weight ratio doesn't apply in WA....yet (one of the good rare cases of "Wait Awhile" state).

Choose a bike that you feel comfortable riding and throwing into corners, this will improve your confidence and riding skillz

Test ride everything 250 and under - and decide what feels best for you. As much as you might be "wow, that one is so pretty" you might get on it and find that it just doesn't work for you, or you don't feel comfortable on it. I was dead-set on a ninja up until I test rode the CBR250R - my decision was made by the fact that I just 'fit' better with the CBR as opposed to the ninja.

+1 for the VTR250 Honda, rode a Ninja as well and found the Honda to be a bit punchier and real nice to ride.

Or the Kawasaki KLX 250, it's a much lower spec but might suit you. The is also the Suzuki TU 250X on the market now, if your into retro type bikes.

Decision should be reasonably simple at the end of the day

If you want a naked - Honda VTR
    Faired - Kawasaki Ninja

Can pick up anywhere from '06 onwards from around $4500 upwards and will suit your 250 needs, regardless of how long you intend to keep it for.
