bike choice advice...
in the near future i hope to be getting my first bike.
im looking at a vtr from 1999 onwards. any negatives / positives about vtr's i should know before i go out and purchase one?
i know that they are not the fastest 250 out there, but the other day i took a zx250r that needed a service really badly for a blaze around my suburb and that was fast for me (im used to being in a car lol).
anyways, any suggestions or advice on bike choice would be gladly accepted.
cheers.

Funny you should say that http://www.perthstreetbikes.com/foru...50-06-a-61448/
Yeah mate, like these guys have said, they're the best learner bike around atm.

lol rhey all seem fast when you're new, umm do you have your licence??? I wouldn't be taking too many bikes for a spin without one.
If you are tall or have a large frame then the VTR250 or the Hyo would be your best bet, depending on your preference to naked or faired bikes.
Look in the For Sale section, there's a few VTR's in there as well as Coralee's nice looking Hyo http://www.perthstreetbikes.com/foru...-gt250r-56971/

Hey mate, if you're looking at a VTR, then a 'similar' bike worth looking at is the Yamaha FZX-250. My brother had one of these and it was awesome fun, easy to ride, and had good solid power. I'm sure there's some guy on here too attest to that?

The VTR is a great learner bike ... also good if you're vertically enhanced. Factory tyres are a little average IMO, otherwise I never had any issues with mine.

if you can find a Hornet 250 have a look at that too... bit more powerful being a 4 cyl machine, still a naked bike (minimal repairs when you drop it), and they look awesome..

A GPX or ZZr250 would be a good choice if you like faired bikes and there are tons of them around, if you like new then the new kawa ninja 250 looks the goods too.I know the early vtr's had cam chain problems but not sure about the newer ones.

DJ749s, thanks for the advice, i will find out about that problem and if it includes the newer ones as well. im avoiding the rgv's as i have heard they cylinder head cracks in the old ones.
also, thanks for the help stoneville, i am a naked fan thats why i am leaning towards the vtr... im not the smallest bloke, the zx250r was too small, the cbr250rr is way too small, ive also ridden esquires zzr, to be honest its a bit ugly... but comfortable.
haha funny you should say that, because uhm... no, i dont have a licence. on my L's. But here in nedlands there are never police about so its pretty chilled. lol
thanks for all the support everyone

Careful mate - you'll find the fact that youre not going to get caught is a really moot point to a lot of people here. Most of us would be far more concerned that without proper training/assessment/experience, you'll hurt yourself or others riding around on your L plates. I know it feels like you know what youre doing, but in just one years time, if you looked back, you'd probably be shocked that you were buzzing around with the lack of skill.
Having said that, I've been where you are, and back then I wouldnt have listened to someone saying to me what I'm saying to you right now

... and of course you realise that any cop reading that will tell his mate Senior Constable Duncan from Subiaco the next time he sees him at the law courts to make a point of cruising down to Nedlands a few nights a week over the next month or so and be on the lookout for a big fella on a 250 ...
