Unhappy CBR250RR not shifting right sometimes?

Sometimes when I change gears under a bit of throttle, the gear doesn't go in right or something and it just revs freely (it happens in more than just shifting 1st to second so it's not just a lazy left foot putting it in neutral).

I'm about due for a major service, is this just something that happens after time that needs replacing or what?

    Cheers

    known as false neutrals.

A foolproof method to prevent false neutrals (upshift and downshift) is to maintain pressure on the shift lever until the clutch is fully engaged. This allows the sliding gear dogs to fully engage when they don't meet up in the correct position. With pressure on the gear lever you will feel it move again through the second half of the travel when the dogs do line up. Maintaining pressure on the shift lever as you release the clutch provides the force to fully engage the gears as they begin to take up the load from the engine. Give it a try. You have to make a conscious effort to do this with every shift.

agree with first response of course, but being due for major service or even an oil change can result in notchy shifts and possibly false neutrals if you don't follow the advice given. You may notice the problem goes away after the service.

    3 things it could be..

    1) chain needs adjustment
    2) could be worn dogs/selector forks
    3) your riding style

Try chain adjustment first, if there's too much slop after adjustment - and you've hard links - just replace the chain.. do the sprockets too..

if it's the selector forks and what not - I've been through this - and it's a right pita to fix mate.. so start simple..

as for your riding style, on the mc22 ( I had one ) the false neutral could come from you needing to adjust the gear lever height to suit your personal style - there's plenty of ' how to's ' out there - if you need the 200+mb service manual - shoot me a pm and i'll link you up to one i've got on my webserver.. and you can have a crack at it ( if you havent already figured it out )

You might find that if you back off on the rev's a touch between 1-n-2 and let it drop in - it might work better.. each bike is different, but thats how my 97 rr mc22 used to work..
