HELP: ZXR 250 - hard to get started.

    Hello everyone on PSB,

I recently got my L's two weeks ago and acquired a ZXR 250...it seems the bike hard to get started, especially when it's cold. I have replaced the battery with new one's, plugs, oil, filter....i have to push start it everytime.
When the engine is warm, there's no dramas starting it....does anyone know or have experienced this before???

    Thanks

Its a pretty old bike. When was it last serviced? If you've only just picked it up, I would recommend booking it in for a thorough going over so you know exactly what you've got on your hands.

..then I'd heed Roger's suggestion and get it looked at by a pro. K-tec or Derek Ball are good choices, both have mobile mechanics so they can check the bike while its cold

sounds like a good plan, thou i dont have much savings left of my hard earned $$$ and i'd like to rectify the problem my self first before i get slug by a big call out fee and labour.......
it's just that initial starting thats a problem, after that the bike goes hard, i'm sure its something simple, if anyone can point me in the right direction.

the carbs on these tend to be in bad shape after all these years and taking them apart u might destroy the rubber parts inside and they arnt easy to come by.

With my ZXR250, it doesnt start if you pull the choke out (before starting it), i think it just floods really easy. maybe try without choke, if your running the battery dead then bump start it, ie pushing (while sitting on the bike) and shifting into 2nd gear.
hope you get it sorted without spendin $$$$, otherwise yeh might be the carbie and maybe you can clean it yourself.. (WD-40 )
    what year aswell?

EDIT: soz didnt notice u already push start it :S

yea the bike starts when i bump start it, it doesnt start with the starter even thou the engine is turning over, but looks like it doesnt turn over quick enough. The carbie should be fine hey coz when i get it started, the bike drives normally, and when i start the bike again, it starts with the choke on.

the bike is 1988 a model

    here's the pic

hmmm... firstly - nice bike, might even be my step-bro's old bike ha maybe maybe, i have no idea how many black '88 zxr's are out there however his bike started fine absolutely fine (around 1.5 years ago soooo gone through another owner, if it was his...)
Im pretty sure I had the same problem, not turning over quite fast enough, but i think it was coz I pulled the choke too early...
so yeh i cant really help u there, unsure of what it could be..
hopefully someone here can give you some ideas

Well it's not my old one...

    1) charge the battery
    2) try riding without the lights on for a bit to get the charge up a bit more
    3) take the battery in for a test at batteryworld etc (free) replace if necessary
    4) carby cleaner - hollow out those idle passages - get motorcycle specific stuff, I used Motul. These carbies are tiny and gum up quickly.

Hi, yea the battery is brand new and has been fully charged for more than 12 hours before i put it in the bike.., yesterday i tried starting it with a jumper lead, however it still not starting. if i clean the carby, will any seal be damaged? when taking the carby out, coz its pretty hard to source parts for this bike.

    Thanks

When I bought mine it had just had a carby clean on top of a major service - it ran extremely well (thanks K-tec!), after about 6-8000km's it started to have idle and starting problems - I ran some Motul carby cleaner through a tank of fuel (or two?) and it pretty much fixed the problem and was still going fine when I sold it - (so another 2-4000km's).

No dissasembly required! - costs about $30 and is a cheap way of either fixing the problem, or eliminating one issue. I remember hearing someone say that these bikes dont like commuting and need to be opened up on a regular basis to keep the carbys from gumming up. It did run better after track days...

Also they dont like idling with the lights on... I think they draw a bit more juice than the alternator puts out at low rpm. At idle mine only had 12V on the battery with lights on - but 14.4V (charging) with them off, If i revved it it would bump up to 14.4V with the lights on at relatively low rpm. I am not sure if there was a short of some sort in the lights circuit somewhere as the previous owner had a neon installed - which I had removed.

ok guys, my bike went bad to worse, this morning i wanted to ride to work to have more practice before my practical test on the 5th oct, before my shadow came around i tried to bump start it by my self in 2nd gear and i went arse up on someone's curb and drop my bike was so spewing, then this top aboriginal bloke help me bump start it and eventually started after going arse up again pushing it. Anyway.....the engine keeps cutting out now when the tap is on 'ON', so i put it on "Prime" and it's all sweet riding to work, however it was rich that i could smell the fuel while riding. Does anyone know why the bike keeps cutting out while riding when the fuel tap is on 'On'???? hate this dramas hey might take it to K'tech on payday.

Does it have a fuel filter? if so replace it - should be able to get one for less than $10 at BCF.
