How soon after getting your RE can you start learning for R license

Just after info on how soon can you start learning to ride bigger bike than 250 ? I know you can not go for test until 12 months - just interested in knowing when i can start R lessons.

    (edit 12 months :-) )

You can start lessons as soon as you passed your RE test. I doubt, that an instructoe would take you on, if you haven't got your RE...

Yup, as Stephan said, once you pass your RE you can get your learners for R class immediately, and there is no need to sit a theory, just pay the money and you get the piece of paper. As for sitting your R class practical, it's at least 12 months, not 2 months, but I'm guessing that was a typo anyway.

    No piece of paper required:

Just a heads up - the Morley Lic centre cocked up my R-class documentation. This happens if you book your test before the 12 months are up. Luckily I kept the receipt and bought it to the test with me, so they had proof enough that I had paid for it.

I rang up 2 weeks ago and some chick said that you can learn right away, no need for R learners as your RE qualifies you. Must display Ls and be shadowed by qualified person.

To take the practical test you must have your R learners and have held an RE for 12 months.

Yeah i asked my instructor about it the other day, No piece of paper required but you do have to have a shadow that has held their "R" class license for longer than 4 years

Reading from comments above, I'm guessing I will still need to go to the licensing centre to get the piece of paper for my R test?

    2 months to GO!!!

If you want to take your test ASAP make sure you go in for your R permit and book a test around 4 weeks before you want to take it.

Also if when you go for your R class learner permit and they say you have not done 12 months on RE yet just insist they give you a permit (some of them seem to struggle with the rules on this). You cannot book a test day without having already purchased a learners permit.

"You do not require a Learners Permit to learn to ride, however you must display L plates and be accompanied by an authorised instructor (see below)."

Are you sure this is true? Because when I rang up just to check they insisted that you MUST have a learners permit and then when in the center when I asked again they told me the same thing so I just got it anyway. Which of course then gave me more problems because I haven't been on R-E for 12 months.

yeah i was told you must have the R-class learners permit to ride an R-class as a learner (with a shadow)... if what people are saying is true, it seems a waste of paper having to get a learners permit if your RE licence covers you to learn on an R-class bike.

You don't need the permit to ride with a shadow but you do need the permit when doing the actual test. The fee covers the assessors time out on the road with you and the paperwork for dpi. You also need the permit if buying a open class bike from a dealership to cover insurance.

yeah roger. i got my permit months ago, even before i got a bigger bike. just wanted to be prepared... plus it made me feel that little bit closer.

but why not simply pay for your assessment when you go for it? seems strange i'm rocking around with a learners permit that i dont even need...

from what i've read on another thread,Riding open class bike on 250 licence? it appears that if you were to go get a learners permit and then ride without a shadow before you pass the test, the courts have something else to fry you with, that being disobeying the learners permit conditions, as well as or instead of the riding out of class offence.

riding out of class will cost you $100 and breaking the conditions of a learners permit is closer to $300
without having a learners permit to break you cant get in shit for breaking it and can only get done with 'out of class'. if they were to get you for driving without a licence then that would be worse and override both offences (seems the PSB jury is undecided on whether an RE rider un-shadowed on an r-class bike is 'out of class', or 'without a licence') but by having bothered to get a learners permit you risk an increased fine (disregarding the possible 'without a licence' charge)

by actually going out of your way to obtain a learners permit, you leave yourself open to more prosecution.
either way your risking a lot riding out of class and shouldnt do it, however, it just seems a strange set up.

huggy: I think they changed the legislation regarding 'riding out of class' a little while ago. Pretty sure now it counts as driving without the correct licence, which means a fine, criminal conviction and loss of the licence you do have.

    According to WAPOL:
Riding out of class is considered as "No authority to drive" which means that a driver is not authorised to drive that particular vehicle, however this can be dealt with by the issuing of an infringement of $100.00 and no demerit points allocated.
A rider who rides who rides out of class can also be summonsed to court, where the penalty will depend on the magistrate's discretion, however there will still not be any demerit points issued.

drifter: How recent is that advice from WAPOL and is it published somewhere? I think (and I'm not certain but I'd like to know) the changes I'm talking about happened start of 2010?

The whole system seems pretty confused... I've just started having R lessons, instructor told me I just need the permit before the test, not for lessons.

I can't remember when I got my RE, how do I find the date (preferably without having to go to a licencing centre)?

    Tim,
just call the licensing centre for that info & you can pay for your Test permit over the phone
with a CC & book the appointment at the same time.
They will send the receipt in the mail...which you need to bring with you for your test.

The whole system is confusing but if you think about it it's not that hard.

Your RE license automatically allows you to ride R with a shadow -> getting some R lessons.
The permit is to allow you to take the R TEST. It basically covers the assessor and dpi admin fee. Without this permit, you cannot take the test (simply because you didn't pay the fee, among other things)

Thanks Stoney & ZedRex for the clarification. Gonna drop by the licensing centre to get the permit and book for the test in June.
