How'd you get your first bike?

So whats the deal with finance?
I'm a student and pretty broke alot of the time, anyone in my situation?
Was it just about saving up those few dollars or is it common place to get a loan/credit/finance??

    i saved.
Bought a bunky (good runner, shabby looker) as it was only a 1st bike and i wasnt going to keep it too long.

It depends on if your doing it for yourself or if you care what your mates say?

    I paid $1500 for it

ate noodles for a coupla weeks and was a massive tight arse, dont piss your money against the wall, and also most finance people want a deposit.

I saved and bought. No parental loan, it was all done on the sly.

You get a choice - save up buy a bunky for $1500 cash, get 3rd party only or 3rd party, fire and theft insurance for a few hundred bucks. Or save up and buy something a little nicer on finance (which will require $1500 or more a year for comprehensive insurance).

Personally, I'd just save the cash and buy a bunky - an older bike which runs well and won't cause too many tears if you smash it.

BTW - if you can't find $1500 to buy a bike, you can't afford to own a bike. They need things like insurance, fuel, reggo, maintenance, riding gear, etc, etc, etc. If your cash flow is so starved you can't come up with $1500 then perhaps the bus is a better alternative (or maybe a job).

My parents bought me a brand new Aprillia RS250 as long as I promised to keep studying and bring home good grades.

I had to put up for the transfer fees and servicing out of my own wage though.

I sold my arse for a couple of weeks. Riding the bike took away the nightmares of what I did although I had to ride standing up

Have you caught the bus recently? Taking in to consideration rego, insurance, petrol etc etc it is still cheaper to run a bike.

I'll have paid off my bike in the money I save from bus fares within 12 months. Ridiculous!

A few years (31) back, I ran a trapline for furs, mowed lawns and had a paper route. Saved as much as I could (minus a few ice cold Mountain Dews) and eventually had the $$$ to buy my first dirt bike. Went from being an A student to an A hole in the course of that one summer. Never been the same since.
btw 1971 TS90 Suzuki, 150.00. Rode it home...

Bummed $5k off a mate cause he was sick and tired of waiting for me to save $5k to go riding with him.

Paid him back in 6 months.

2006 Hyo GT250R in black, tinted screen and growler pipe --- I thought I had the best bike ever created.
Yamaha MT-01: R1 front end, 1670cc V-twin, Staintune pipes, Power Commander, BMC filter, braided lines, Repsol orange rim stripes.

Get a second opinion, or maybe just some real news.
