    Question Hyosung GT250R oil leak

    Yo

Looking for a first bike to buy, was pretty set on the Hyosung GT250R due to my tall (lanky ) stature. Came across a 2006 model with 6500kms on the clock. I noted there was some oil on the fairings underneath the engine and thought it was pretty unusual for a bike of its age - maybe it was other lubricants but I doubt it. It had been left out in the weather for some time.

Request advice from previous owners or mechanics, rather than trolls/Hyohaters!

Any one else experienced leaks from a bike this age?
    Was it an easy fix?
    Should I avoid it?

    Cheers

    Phil

Did you actually see it dripping or was it just grease/chain lube/road muck?

If it was definately engine oil avoid it, forget about it, walk away. There are plenty of 250's around.

Where in the belly pan was it?

Mine has gunk from chain lube like most.

Could well be just from oil filter seal.

No didnt see it leaking, couldnt see oil on top or around engine - could be due to fact it was smothered in degreaser 4 weeks prior.

We changed oil filter, i didnt notice any oil around here.

Noticed build up above/around gear selector (excuse terminology, learning) and under this on the (bellypan? again, terminology ) fairings

What you reckon, worth the trouble?

Sounds like chain lube to me.

Why has it only got 6500km on it? That's barely 1300kms per year, I'd be more worried about a bike that sits idle for long periods of time than one that gets ridden regularly.

This = not a good thing. Unless it's dirt cheap I'd stay away and by dirt cheap I mean <$1500

I kept finding "oil like fluid" in the belly pan of the fairings when I first got my bike brand new. I would clean it, go for a ride and it would be there when I got home. Was concerned so rang the bike shop and had them come check it, turned out it was chain line/grease from all the moving parts of the bike that when it got hot, turned to liquid and sprayed over everything. Stopped after about 600km.

Point to this post is that if the bike has done very few Kay's, and this oil like fluid was never cleaned up, it could very well be that.

It doesn't just happen on new bikes, pretty well happens on any well maintained and looked after bike, if your chain gets lubed it usually gets enough lube to be flicked around unless you buy some really good shit.
It is a normal thing for a bike to have a bit of lube around those areas but if there is heaps I'd start asking questions like do you ever clean it?
Whenever I lube my chain I clean all the splatter off and wipe the chain down and then apply new lube. So my bike is pretty clean but by the time re-lube comes there is a fair bit of crap around.
not everyone wants to pickup trash from the side of the road, leave it for the crims and the junkies.

Agree with all the above - also Hyos have an oil breather pipe hose that sometimes blows out oil - someone servicing the bike may have moved it or pointed the hose the wrong way (mine dribbled on top of the crankcase). Another possible leak are the rubber seals inside the cam chain tensioners - the tensioners still work, will only cost about $30-$40 to replace the part, but its a fiddly job.

I agree with the above, the only time I had a oil leak was when the mechanic over filled it too much and came out of the oil and oil filter area and it is quite obvious when it does. I had to take apart my fairing the other day and noticed that the bottom belly like all bikes I know have a large amount of gunk - chain lube and dusk etc.

So if you can't see a distinct sign of leakage from oil filter or oil I wouldn't worry. As above the oil breather pipe does drop some but I have not seen mine do it yet.

But I am not a mechanic just another hyo owner, though selling mine soon enough for my big bike.

I got same bike, when I purchased mine it was the same most of it was chain lube, but closer inspection revealed a slight oil leak @ half moon seal on rocker cover....easy fix pull off rocker cover cleaned it and put a dab of threebond in the corners fixed...

Yer another thing with the hyo's is the drain gap in the fairings ( where the oil is "meant" to drain out from )under the sump doesn't line up perfectly with the sump bolt. So the first time i did an oil change on my hyo a small amount > 250mls actually fell inside the fairing bellypan as opposed to the nice bucket i had underneath. And due to the lip just inside that gap it was too hard for me to get all the excess oil out other than what i could reach with a rag. So i did the slack thing and left the oil there as it already had chain oil and road grime in there anyway. Unless it's obviously dropping off the engine i wouldn't worry.
