I will learn to ride soon, promise!

Well I was supposed to have my first official lesson with a bloke named Rob on Friday, but he had to cancel cause his practice bike wasn't in running order ( I'm assuming the last learner dropped it) could have rescheduled for today but I'm back at work. I was really lookin forward to the lesson, though not the heat, but hey thems the breaks, right?

But get this! I had another lesson booked for early Feb, but he had to cancel that one too! Guess why? He forgot it was his friggin birthday!

    So go with someone else

Look at the Instructors thread in the Two Fiddy section and ring around

Get a couple of lessons, buy a bike then get ask nicely for a shadow and get out there, you're missing the fun

Got a bike already, and I've already paid up 5 lessons out of the bike loan. I'm gunna start hittin shadows up, but my understanding is that they prefer you to have some kind of riding ability! So I was gunna do the lessons I've paid for first.

I'm in for a lesson the day before his birthday now, I just thought it was kind of an odd thing to forget! So there shall be lots of mocking when I do go

Depending on how you pick it up in the first couple of lessons you should try to space them out a little bit. Once you are competent to ride on the road you can go a long way just practicing by yourself or with a friend. I'm thinking o-turns and e-braking which, once you know the basic technique, are 99% practice and feel.

You can do o-turns in front of an instructor all day, and he'll give you pointers, but I would say you are better off getting the hang of that stuff on your own, and using up your last few lessons learning road-craft.

I only did two lessons, and I started from absolutely nowhere. But I spent a lot of time mucking around by myself in big empty carparks getting by braking and low-speed skills up.

2 or 3 lessons should be plenty to bring you up to speed for a shadow, save your last 2 for fine tuning on your test day. Unless you have trouble getting the hang of it you might even be out on the road with your instructor first lesson, 5 lessons may get you through the test without bothering with a shadow but lots take double that so the extra practice is beneficial.
Do you remember the good old days before the internet?

That was pretty much the plan Filbert, I've snuck a few rides down to my brothers & back, so I'm past the "Holy shit! I'm on a bike" stage.

A friend of mine once said "The easiest way to learn is just to take off & start riding! If you wind up dead or in prison, you're obviously doing it wrong..."

Hey Boogz, if you are in Southern River and your current instructor is not working out, I would recommend Kev Taylor as an instructor - he is in Canning Vale. PM me for his details if you like
