    Exclamation Kelmscott Assesment tips

Hi all, i have my assesment tommorow at kelmscott.
Im fairly happy with my riding technique and safety precautions i take. so this post isnt about any of that.
I myself have never been to kelmscott. so my question is, Since iv never been there Im just wondering if there are any pointers about the area that may get me sprung if i have no local knoweledge of the place. (i know i shouldv gone there before hand to suss the place out, but iv just been flat out with work.)

any google map screenshots to accompany any infomation would be mighty helpfull
    THANK YOU!

There's a kidney-shaped roundabout you might have to negotiate

    and

You'll have to cross the train tracks at some point and the boom gate might be down, so make sure you stop in an appropriate area, do all your head checks etc

Beyond that no different to any other AFAIK

My question is if you need local knowledge to pass a license, how are you going to be able to ride everywhere else? A lot of the time you won't have that local knowledge of where you are heading either?

After the train tracks you will be asked to turn left , its an imidiat left after crossing the tracks ( well I did at least)
Lots of cars doing weird shit on you there, carachter building .
The route isnt to bad realy.
Just relax and go for a ride, too easy.

I had to go over the train tracks then left on Albany hwy then 1st right down behind the shops to do my "u" turn and E stop then back out onto Albany Hwy and back think this is the way we went I passed even though the berg shat itself on the way back was a hot day and no thermo fan. Good luck. Ride confidently and decisively.

valid point. However it is for assesment purposes. And local knoweledge may be more helpfull than not.
i do see your point though and perhaps im just feeling a little anxious from the fact that i will be assesed on my ability to find streets in a place that iv never been to before..(never been to good at that) added on top of the assesment of my riding skilzzz. [sarcasm]And i know if i fail it will be because of the lack of local knoweledge[/sarcasm].

im probably worrying to much arent i? haha.

It's normal to be nervous! We've all been there... our minds do tend to think of the worst case scenarios. Best tip I can give you, seeing as I don't have a clue about the kelmscott area, is to remind yourself that you are as prepared as you can be and there is no reason you won't pass, other than nerves getting in the way. The worst that can happen is you fail and have to do it again. Nothing to lose, so go and have fun!

Thats where i passed my 250. Make sure you head check both ways over the railway line. Got me on my driving test, i instant failed that one. And the kidney shaped roundabout i lost a point at for something minute. I accidentley drifted over the line on the left as i was entering the round about (from memory).

They took me to the first left as you come out of the licensing center round about for O turns and an ebrake straight away. Hope it helps!

When I did my test at Kelmscott a few weeks ago, I repeated the examinors instructions on where he wanted me to go I found that was quite helpful

There are a couple of routes that go nowhere near the railway, in the opposite direction in fact. When I did my test there it took me about 10 minutes, I subsequently thought I had failed; so be careful even on the way back to the licensing centre.

When exiting the license centre and turning left, you may have to negotiate a round-about (the first round-about) approximately 1km up the road. While coming from the license centre this is no problem, but be careful with his round-about if you have to pass back through it at some stage, as one of the approach directions has two lanes, with one of them being a left turn ONLY lane.
When I was doing my lessons some kid that had my instructors bike before me failed his test due to going straight through from the left turn only lane.

Google Map starting at Licensing Centre and ending at the round-about

I did my R-E at Kelmscott in June last year. had a pommy bloke for the test, apparently he'd been there for a while, could still be. IMO he was fair.

for the test i went left, out of the licencing centre, then right at the round about and then down the second left, pulled over, did the e-brake. because i'd misinterpreted his directions of "right at the roundabout and then left at the second" as 'right at the round about then take the second left' we rode somewhere else to do the O'turns. couldnt be 100% sure where though. was a narrow street even for the vtr ... a new estate area...

rode for about 5-10 minutes on the way back, which made me feel less confident about passing, but turned out i'd done ok.

points to note, as already mentioned, the lane markings coming into roundabouts. be on the ball to avoid getting stuck in the wrong lane. IMO, if you stuff up when your told to go left and you get stuck in the right lane, just go right, head up the road, do a safe U'turn and head back in that direction. i could be completely wrong, but i believe it would work out more in your favour if the assessor can see that you self-recovered legally rather than freaked out and jumped across an unbroken white line.

i never had to cross the railway, but yeah, that could be challenging for you, as it is fairly busy around there.
the way i went i got picked up on for not going at the required speed limit. from memory i was 10 under for a fair bit of it, meaning i was doing 50 in a 60 zone. i thought it may have been 60 but played it on the safe side at 50. make sure you note what the speed limit is past the licencing centre on your way in, to avoid getting pinged for that.
i also got noted for going 40 through a school zone after 9am. granted it was only just after 9 and that he was satisfied by my acknowledgment of the varied speed zone he didnt cause me too much grief over that one.

anyway, thats the extent of my R-E test knowledge for Kelmscott.
    good luck with the test!

oh, and take it easy if your gonna head straight up canning mills road for a hoon
i may have nearly come a gutser with my new found freedom!

I had my R-E in Kelmscott last year as well.
The assessor took me into a dead end street (housing area still under construction) to do the O turns. It was very very tight, dropped my foot down once but I still managed to pass.

My advice: take it slow and ride according to the weather conditions...It's a downpour today
