Are talking about changing lanes from left to right on a double lane carriage way or with in the one lane. When changes lanes on a dual-carriage way then yes Indicate. But within the one lane it creates confusion and people start indicating to turn on the learner rides.

During the learner rides you should need to change position in the lane that often so its best to just acknowledge to the person behind you that you intend to move over in front of them. As Machast suggest do it slowly and you shouldnt have a problem.

From the people i have talked to about using signals on the learner rides. General consences was that it is best not to use signals when changing lane positions, foot signals or indicators. There should be enough room for you to move around in your lane once you do a head check. If you do plan to use foot signals or something you can, but dont expect people to adhere to them. Not everyone knows what they are and not everyone uses them.

Well then obviously you dont attend OTHER group rides then cause if you did and tried doing that you would be on your arse with a wrecked bike next to you.

The reason you indicate while in the same lane is so the oerson behind Aaswell as in front knows you are changing position .

When you indicate to change position the person behind then knows NOT to come screaming up to take that position .

There are alot of signals that we use on group rides for various things so we start at the basics then work our way up that way there isnt any confusion over things or what is for what.

If when some of the people that attend these rides "graduate" on and attend other group rides they will be in for a shock if they do not get an education in things they are supposed to know

indicate when changing position in a lane or changing lanes
pointing your foot out means either your turning in that direction OR there is something on the road to avoid

there are a few more but not for an open forum

If the general consensus is that these little things shouldnt be taught to new riders then they are in for a shock when they go on a experienced ridewhat I mean is how are they going to learn if they are not taught???

OH and just who are these people you asked cause I will argue till I am black and blue in the face over this because I have seen some new riders attend other rides and LACK the neccesities of what is typed above only to cause them to be sternly told what a squid they are in nice terms.

You mean there are other rides besides the learner ride??? OMFG!! Your point is correct though...every wed, friday or sunday night ride i go to we indicate when changing lane position and so on...and these rides are a hell of a lot more spirited then the learner rides and we dont seem to have any issues...

Let the bitching begin...oh hang on too late for that...

Um

Nobody has stepped up to the plate to encourage learners and new riders to enhance their skills like Stoneville. Stoney has been the best advocate for learner rides that i have ever seen in my short riding history.

Some experienced big bike riders come along to these rides thinking they will see crap everywhere and a crap ride however i feel they are usually pleasantly surprised. However alot of these riders will not offer advice to new riders and riders they feel do the wrong things then go and complain about it somewhere else.

I was on a couple of rides this weekend and was offered great advice by a number of very experienced riders about my counter steering and general riding. I took this on board, tried the advice and loved it. This is what LEARNER rides are all about.

Stoneville does an EXCELLENT job with learner rides, i know of only a single (albeit series) of mishaps that have occured during these very numerous events. These rides inspire learners with confidence and an increased awareness of their riding that only time and experience can instill. A very big thankyou from a learner rider goes to Stoney for organising these rides when nobody would.

Oh an everyone knows they story about arguing on the internet don't they ?

Close this topicccccc....
