New 125 v old 250
Hey guys,
Looking around for my first bike and having a bit of trouble with this decision.
Do I go with:
1. A brand new Honda CBR125R with 12 months warranty for $4000, looks very nice (for a small bike), fuel injected and other modern features with not too many worries. However it only has 13hp and wont go much above 100kmh...not that I need to anyway.
Honda MPE - Introduction
or
2. A 10-15yo 250cc bike like a ZXR250 for a similar price, which will be faster than the 125 but due to its age more risk of having to spend money on it.
Do you think I'd get bored of the 125? Are they that slow/bad to ride? In the end its only for 9-12 months and then I'll be looking for a Daytona 675!
Thanks guys.

personally i would lean towards a 2nd hand 250
several reasons but the big one would be resale, you wont loose much with a 250 (hell i actually sold mine for more hehe) where as buying new you wont get anywhere near what you bought it for

forget the cbr125 or other 125's they are very small and quite slow. I was in the same boat as you and had the same line of thinking, until i started my lessons on a cbr125. It sounds like a posty bike. Trust me in about a month you will be very bored of it. Better off getting a zx2r, cbr, fzr...plus there are 2nd hand cbr125's floating around already which are basically new.

+1 for the 250 - you'll be bored after an hour on the 125....
Also you can probably pick up a <10yo 250 for $4kish

Second hand 250. Everyone on here that's purchased a CBR125 has got sick of it very quickly.

alredy bored of the 250 cant imagine what it would have been like if i had a 125, theres also another option... zongshengs make a new 250 sports bike(its actuly like 230) and they are selling for 4k brand new, in saying that tho i wouldnt recommend you buy 1 as they arnt a) japanese and b) very well known so they will have a few issues to sus out yet and c) you can go much above 120km/h on them

I will forgive you for being new to this bike thing. but never knock a 125.
any Mito or RS125 would run rings around your babyblade.
i've been riding my mito since 2002. It never bores me.

I think that 2 strokes such be excluded from a noob market as in most people dont know how to take care of them, and end up having a bad experience.
A mate of mine had a 200* something aprilia rs125 and he always used to tell me about how shit and unreliable it was and to never get one, no wonder it was unreliable, he had shit idea of how to take care of it.

One of my best mates learned to ride on a rs125. On her test, she used the instructors CB250, and she was like "OMG, this thing is forgiving, and you can do stuff so much easier!!!"
but yeah, 2 strokes don't count cuz you get like 40hp...

If I had to do my 250 time again as a n00b, but knowing what I know now, I'd go for one of the 4-cylinder 250's. But not one of the overpriced CBR's, but either a Yamaha Zeal, or a Suzuki Across or Bandit. You can easily pick up a well sorted example for $4k.
