    New Re / R regulations

When I had finished my test I spent some time chatting with the examiner. He said they are considering abolishing the requirement for people over 25 years to have to do the R test. He said after 12 months your RE will automatically upgrade to an R.

He also mentioned they may get rid of the 250cc rule and make it a power to weight rule, so once again, people over 25 years could learn on a 500 / 650cc. Or alternatively have a more powerful bike de-tuned for the first 12 months.

I hope these suggestions are accepted.

we need to bring the LAMS system in but having to do an R class test I think is better than just letting it be. At least then you have to ride a larger bike for your license test (only experience some people get before big bike) before going out and buying a liter bike

Do we really need a LAMS system?

Also locking out anyone under 25 from getting an R class licence is fucking retarded.

Thats pretty much the Q-Ride system that they have in Qld. And what a great (sic) success that has been. More motorcyclist deaths than ever before. I think this system is good its just being let down by staffing problems at DPI

Said it before, saying it again: No one's seen so much as a drafted proposal for such a thing at the moment. Sounds more like the way said assessor would like things to be...

There are already a fair few threads about just this matter...

    know just what you mean

back in 1986 when I got my R-E (yes, I know it wasn't called that back then) you only had to wait 12 months and it was automatic upgrade. had my R-E 11 months when they changed to the current arrangement.

Whilst it sounds age-ist, and probably is a little bit - up until *around* that age, most males are bulletproof and 10 feet tall (yes, i was too), so I can see their reasoning - to an extent.

However, the R test is a bit of a joke really, so I see this proposal as simply a tax on the young....

Yes. Heard the power to weight bit before. Hence you see less and less 250cc in shops. I ask the reps at Causeway Honda and they said we are changing to the power to weigh system on the 1st July. Time will tell though.

It wont be like you can go out and get a 600 supersport bike, but maybe something like the one of the motards or an XR400 etc which are abundant, and not as fast as a sports 250cc bike. In reality it's more of a common sense approach, because I can go and get a rgv which will be more powerful than these bikes under the current system.
