[quote=Jedi;1010684]Just sit in first gear with the clutch in like you're about to launch. In the same vein, learn the traffic light sequence so you can get an even better launch. [quote]

I'd be a bit wary of launching as soon as the light turns green given Perth drivers love of running orange and red lights.

Wait half a sec and have a good look both ways, you'll still be across the intersection before most cars.

Good point, I always look left and right as I take off from the lights, not much point getting off first only to be collected by a driver, usually trucks going through a red light.

Thanks for the tips everyone. As doing a google search I mainly find people treating lane splitting as an extreme sport.

split between the 2 right-most lanes on the freeways

also, if your on the back wheel you dont have to worry about your mirrors hitting other cars

My rules for lanesplitting:
Rule 1: Know my limits. Don't do it if you can't pass the cars 10km/h or more faster than them (you spend too much time next to them). At the same time, don't go more than about 30 km/h faster... you're looking to be merged with if you go faster than that.
Rule 2: Know my speed. Generally speaking, unless the drivers are being c*nts (e.g. 3 abreast down the freeway at 90 km/h across all lanes with traffic backed up behind them and no one overtaking anyone else) I don't split above 40-50 km/h. @ 50 km/h my stopping distance is around ~ 20m with my brakes covered and slow reaction time, or about 5 cars lengths.
Rule 3: Know my open spaces. If there's an open spot next to a car, they will move. Guaranteed. Even if it's a slower lane. It's like a freakin law. And most of the time, they'll be a bastard about it and stop across the line so you have to stop splitting. So be prepared to stop.
Rule 4: Know my width. Cagers hate it when you take off their mirrors. Especially when you do it unintentionally.
Rule 5: Know what's behind me. I consider it rude to stop the guy behind me splitting faster. I would pull into a space, let him pass, then follow him at a safe distance.

They're my rules, and the only time I was knocked off was when I broke them. My Dad splits under the same rules. They kept me safe after I learned my lesson.

May the splitting gods look after you and keep you shiny side up, and welcome to the two wheeled road.

Down the far left and right hand side or the freeway you will find two speshal lanes which are the correct width for bikes. Also useful for Ambo's and other crazy drivers who dont like traffic.

^^ not necessarily such a good idea.

They're *emergency* lanes.

I.e., car in front of you has a blow out, guess what they're going to do? Yes, that's right - chances are, they'll pull into that lane without even bothering to look (they "know" there's not going to be anyone there).

+1 to sticking in the right-most lanes on the freeway though, not the left most lane. Reason? So many blind fuckwits decide to do the last minute "indicate-turn-oh-fuck-almost-missed-my-exit" manouvre... whether you're in their way or not...
