R-E learners permit valid for 3 YEARS!?!?!

Hey all, i'm not sure if this is common knowledge or not, but i went in to the Wilagee licensing joint this morning to get a copy of my learners permit as i lost the piece of paper. The woman pointed out that i only had a few weeks left on it so when she printed me a new one she fixed me up with a 3 year extension on just the learners permit.

Apparently this is becoming the norm because they're being flooded with re-applications etc.

Just thought it might be a handy piece of information for anyone pressed for time on their L's.

Might have to do that when I'm back in Perth in December.
Don't want to go through the hassle of changing my licence to ACT yet, even though that means I will automatically go to R class.
I've paid for a test in WA dammit - I'm going to make sure I use it - eventually.

if you have a one year one its counted as a three year one... so im lucky, and you dont need a reprint if yours expires(the one year)

I'm not sure I follow... Are you suggesting that if your permit is one of the old annually extended permits that it's valid for 3 years in spite of the fact that it has a set expiry date printed on the permit?

I'm not totally sure of the ins and outs f it. But i'd from what she was telling me, souded like the original is stll only the 1 year and if you get an extension they add another 3 to it. Think it's because there are so many peole applying for extensions that they extended them to avoid so many applications.

That's not how it works, though. Which is why I was confused as to how he might come to that conclusion... Or whether or not anyone here wants to be the one to try to explain that idea to the nice officer a year and a half after the permit states it has expired and see if you get a response other than "see you in court".

And yes, it is to alleviate the renewal application flow, which should hopefully start to pay off in another 8 or 9 months. Shame about how by the time we get there the population growth/other currently unrelated tasks being palmed off to front line Licensing staff will likely mean there's no improvement in service times anyway...

of course if you lose your slip again youll still need to reapply, whether it runs out soon or not
