stack / bike repair

i came off the bike on the country run today, not much damage to the bike or myself; need a new front brake lever and ill take a look at my indicator, apart from that a fair few scratches.

any advice on what to do with scratched fairing? can i sand / repaint?

thanks to the 2 blokes who stuck with me and called the RAC, and the others who were in the other crash group.

Yep, agree. Nice to hear that there are no injuries to you.

Fairing rash can be fixed...bones take longer. Can't offer advice on the repair aspect of your fairing until you post pictures.

Bad luck about the off harns, glad you got back OK, cheers to Mex and the other one (?) for stopping with you, we heard that you were OK.

If the fairing is only scratched I'd leave it for awhile, just replace the brake lever, hope it doesn't take you too long to get back out there

well one of the mounting bolts that hold the fairing on was bent and its smashed the fairing around that, and its got a crack running down a small part of it, but they werent in a great way to begin with.

two wheel wreckers has two ZXR250's which are about 90% complete sitting on the floor

sorry to hear about your off.

you can buy a fibreglass repair kit from supercheap for about $20.. sand and prep the area, lay fibreglass on inside of crack to strengthen it and filler on the outside. Sand the outside back so its smooth and spray with a rattle can.

AAAARGH

Fairings are ABS. DO NOT USE FIBREGLASS REPAIR GEAR ON ABS

The polyurethane or epoxy resins will not bond chemically to the fairing plastic and rely solely on the mechanical keying of the resin into scratches you make with sandpaper.

Either buy a Plastex kit and follow the instructions to repair the fairing with that, or ask very nicely for one of the two plastic welders on the forum to get in touch with you.

These solutions will both give you a solid repair which retains the original flexibility of the plastic etc.

Pretty sure Plastex is also known as Q-bond in Australia, because they seem to be the same thing.

Harns, if you go the Plastex/Q-bond route, it's available from Repco and will work fine for fixing those cracks and the small missing areas (areas 2 and 1). Not sure how you'll go with area 3 though.

Some spray putty will help fill in those scratches so that you don't have quite as much sanding work to do.

I can't tell, but it's possible that the entire front section is fibreglass. You can get fibreglass replacement bodywork for most of the older 4cyl 250s, so it's possible that it's been there ever since Harns bought it.

EDIT: just gonna nip down to bunnings and grab some sand paper.. should i get like 2 different grits? one course and one fine?
EDIT: how do i respray it? will i have to respray the whole thing so that the colour is the same? what type of paint?

Chris that can be rebuilt, we have done it plenty of times, but a good plastic person can fix it in half the time

As said there are a few on here, also

Plastronics
Custom Plastic and Paint
15 Newlyn St
Belmont
9277 1737

The front fairing def looks like a replacement fibreglass one

Good luck with it all
