sif scooter.
Make use of the people around you
Everytime I have dropped my bike, I havent had to pick it up I feel sorry for the last guy that picked up the gixxer, I think he did his back (she fell in a really bad position)

Apparently, there is a special way to do it. I have a vague idea, but Im sure someone around here will know.

you and your short legs

I can understand you'd be getting a bit undermined in the confidence department, but look at what is the main cause i.e. are you grabbing the front brake when you are going slow? Is it only happening when you are stopped? If so why, are you leaning the wrong way, not able to have your right foot down when you put the side stand down with the left leg? When you are taking off, is it a balance issue?

Grab a shadow and see if they can help you with where you are going wrong.

I hope you get it sorted, you obviously want to ride to go to the trouble of buying a bike and getting licenced etc

I've had to pick a couple up in my time, but it def is better if you can someone else to do it

Next time you're on a newbie ride I'll show ya how to do it

Gotta use those child bearing hips to pick it up. That's no good, should go on some group rides to get your confidence up.

I'd bet you just need to get used to the bike and how to keep it balanced. The things Stoneville mentioned are important - especially don't grab your front brake at low speed.
If you're having trouble touching the ground... Instead of leaning the bike and putting one foot down, try sliding off the seat slightly to the left side (with right foot on rear brake) or roll your hips forward and put both feet down if that helps.

You'll find the most comfortable and stable way to support the bike over time. Don't give up. It all just takes a bit of getting used to.

*EDIT* also - there have been discussions both on the main forum and in the Kitchen on how to pick up your bike if you drop it. Check em out.
But as Darkbyte said - chances are there'll be someone to help pick it up anyway.

Feeling helpless sucks, but you can pick up your own bike you only need to be shown how to do it. Once you've done it once, you know you can do it again.

Trust me on this me I didn't think I could pick up mine it out weights about 3x. I don't have males to call on to help so I have to know how to do it.

If you want to know how I'm sure one of the girls can help you out.

Everyone has teething problems. Dont ever feel helpless as you can always ask for help. Just because you cant pick up your own bike doesnt make anyone think any less of you. Im sure there are a lot of people here who can't pick up their bike, or would really hurt themselves to save face (not good either). Just stop and think a moment about what happens when you drop it, once you figure it out, you will be fine.

Try and relax, the more nervous you get, the more likely you will be to drop it. Take a few deep breaths and tell yourself that you believe in you. I think there is a post in The Kitchen somewhere that has the words to a Kiss song I sing to myself when Im nervous (the song is called "I"), it might be useful.

It doesnt matter if you drop it. Thats what your first bike is for (and we have all done it, multiple times even)

Flash a bit of leg. That always helps get the bikes back up

It is difficult to pick up a bike on it's side if you don't know what to do, and frankly, who wants to practice on their own bike?

I think I might have to ask one of the guys with crash cages on their bikes to practice how to do it myself.

Don't let it get to you - think about where you may have stuffed up learn from it. And get back on that bike!

Have a look in here:

http://www.perthstreetbikes.com/forum/inde...showtopic=23069

and see which Shadows are near you. PM one of them and see if they can take you out this weekend for a ride to see what you're doing wrong.

At slow speed, walking pace use your back brake. It was one of the things I actually agreed about that msgroup said...

And like everyone says, you just need to learn technique to pick your bike up..

Do not give up...

Hope this makes you feel better Cocopop.

Bit of a story.lol

Aint no shame in it... I am a newby and I've done it twice... This isn't any expert advice, but it has worked for me and built my confidence.

1st time was the worst.

I dropped mine, not even 5mins from picking it up, only 6kms on the clock. Didnt want to head straight out on the main road and I was really bloody nervous, so took it down a back street and went to go around a col-da-sac, did not realise I was in 2cnd gear, going way too slow, LOOKED AT THE GROUND and down she went... I had my Shadow with me and I think it scared him more than me.lol (Shadow picked it up)lol had no time to show me how to pick it up as I was blocking traffic in an industrial estate. No one stopped to help "Didnt flash my legs" lol

2cnd time..

Practicing U turns on a slight hill, not enuf revs, going too slow and LOOKED AT THE GROUND AGAIN!!! Friend who was helping me to practice panicked and came running over and he picked it up.lol I have yet to learn how to pick it up as well. Desmogod, put in a great link, wish I had of read it earlier.

Both times really shook me up too and I still have a habit of looking at the GROUND, dont know if this helps, but for me the best thing to do was get straight back on it, Focus on taking off verrry slowly, (sure reved her quite a bit)lol Definitely not look at anything or anyone else around and keep thinking/telling myself "I can do this".

Once you know "what it is" your doing, you might not stop doing it straight away, (well I haven't, everynow and then I still look at a kerb either going straight or around a corner/roundabout) or pothole on the road and then something kicks in and you realise "what your doing" and correct it! and then HEELLOOO you get this real U BEAUT sense of achievement and confidence. I'v still got heaps more to learn and I am in no doubt I may do it again, but I try not to think about it.

Goodluck, Go on a newby friendly ride, C ya out there

Wait until that helpless feeling becomes 'pissed off'...that'll help you pick it up..

Couldn't lift my 160kg 250cc when I dropped it at school once - I had no chance, was so embarrassed!
Then 2 years later I dropped my 220kg top heavy XLV750 road/trail out the front of a bike shop in Broome...was so pissed at myself I reefed it up, jumped on and took off before anyone could think about helping...didn't even cross my mind I might not be able to lift it...

It'd help to figure out where to lift it from, and then you'll get it sussed over time..

Lifting up a bike thats got tired and decided to lie down.

Method 1. Twist the bars so they are full lock with the front wheel turned up towards the sky. Bend zee kness grab the lower grip of the handle bars/clipon's with both hands take the strain and see if you can get it to move ie test the wieght. If its beyond you get some help back injuries are no fun if help is avalible its always worth useing. Females can genrally bat thier eyelids a bit and get help pretty quick. Then lift just be sure not to flick it up so fast it goes over the other way. Depending on what side its on might be worth getting the sidestand out before lifting.

Method 2 postion yourself around the tank bar area, work out what you can get a good grip on under the tank handle bars (turn handle bars to full look as in method one before lifting by them) frame under the riders seat etc etc. Turn around so your back is to the bike. Bend with the knees and grip the bike on the bits you had worked out earlier keep back straight and lift.

These are genral guides only no resposiblity taken for any injury damage etc etc. Be also careful if you have just had a spill you may have injuries that haven't started to hurt yet and you can do more damage. Bikes get fixed with only pain to the bank balance people are a whole different story.

Advice hopefully never needed but useful to know.
