Well the other day I went to frasers and talked to the guy about test rides - they were fine with shadowing me while I test rode their bikes..
Today I went into causeway yamaha and was told that even if I had my R class they probably wouldnt let me test ride til I'd had it for 'some time'..
What shops around the place are R Learner friendly? I'd like to buy a bigger bike for when I get my R's but I don't want to buy without a test ride...

The Frasers guys are great. You'd expect them to be the elitist ones but they're actually the most down to earth.
I think it comes down to a trust thing and if they like the look of ya! I test rode bikes on my R Ls. But I also didn't shop at Causeway.
One shop took a mate out on his R-E Ls. When I went looking for my big bike I took a mate with me who could shadow. Some will just throw you the keys while others will insist that they shadow you.
I'll PM you the shops that I know have done it... Coz I dunno if it was normal or done as a favour, so I won't post it... PM on it's way!

It has a lot to do with insurance. Believe Fraser’s have the cover, but you have to sign to say you will pay the excess of 2G's. I test rode a bike at Fraser’s on R L's. Think to keep overall premiums down some outlets will not have the cover to allow L's on bikes. Only way is to ask and if you are turned down then politely ask why you are being turned down.

Ahhhh.... Nope.
White one collected several months ago!
They're an awesome dealer, though and were great with me being on Ls and all.

Ahh kewl.... yes they are very obliging to us poor learners. I suspect the young blonde that collected hers on Saturday whilst I was awaiting PD on the MT was a learner also.

I didn't get around to taking anything out, but one of the guys at Rick Gills offered to shadow me for a test ride. Tho it was a fairly old 2nd hand bike and that might make a difference. I believe they let TigerLeo take his Hornet out unsupervised in the back alley (that right Steve?)
Also, Motorcycle Masters, tho not a dealer to my knowledge but sell 2nd hand bikes, they let me take a bike out (the 250 I eventually bought) shadowed by a mate who was a fairly well known customer to them. Although he was only a noob himself so not <strike>at all</strike> technically legal. But still they were cool with it.

Yeah, sort of - Mike was there in the laneway chatting up some girl while I was going up and down the lane way - so I was kind of supervised!
But of course, I am such a mature and responsible looking citizen, who wouldn't trust me??

Owing to new forum rules i am not allowed to mention which shops, but i will say that i have R learners and i have been allowed to test ride a couple of bikes. As has already been said i think some of it comes down to how they think you 'look'.

That's a bit daft... what happens if someone takes a bike for a 'ride' and crash it - the bikes found to be defective ( i.e. tyres or brakes ) and you injure yourself and a 3rd party..
That's a world of pain right there...
YICKY !

it's a tough one. I LOVE the upright almost dirtbike riding position on the MV.. and how it looks.. and the sound..
Just not sure if it's the sensible option

think of it this way: it's less of a jump than going from nothing to a VTR
so, not it isn't too much of a jump.
