    to thrash or to fix??

After not having a bike for a few months now I recently bought a cheap hyo down some backyard alleyway . It's a 06 gt250r with 20'000km and has several problems; such as ticking engine, rust, broken mirror, diy FE etc...can't expect much more than that. 3rd party insurance with fire/theft only $10/month. Has new tyres, oil, good frame etc so it's still roadworthy

Since i'll be in the market for a bigger bike in a few months should I?

    a) spend money to bring it back to a decent standard? needs exhaust ($160), mirrors ($60), possibly new engine bits (hopefully less than >$500) plus more

or b) ride it till it gives up, then donate the bits that are left to people on psb that need em? Hence allowing me to save up a bit more for something decent

    ...the dilemma

Sell it to someone poor who needs a fixer-uppa for a first bike, get bigger bike quicker and ride with a shadow for couple of months.

suss out how cheap ebay stuff is. You can get budjet mirrors for about $10 a pair
When I get sad, I stop being sad, and be AWESOME instead. True story.

Ride it until you upgrade, then clean up the cosmetics and sell it. You'll be surprised how long a thrasher lasts and how much some muppet will pay for it when you're done if it's clean.

+1 ride the hell out of it, make it reliable fix the minor stuff (safety issues) and tidy it up, and if you got it cheap you could have the double bonus of making a bit of extra cash back but also passing on a good first bike to someone who may otherwise have not know what they were getting into.

Depends what u paid for it really.

A ticking engine could just be valve clearances, or might be enough for u to run it into the ground easily. Sort that out first.

+1 for tiding it up, and selling when u upgrade

not vavle clearances, they're in spec....im giving kamahl a call tomorrow about it so i'll wait and see what he says. If it sounds cheap i'll fix it, if it sounds bad i'll ride the hell out of it .

Why would you ever voluntarily own a bike that you can't ride by yourself? Ok so I'm on the east coast where we don't have shadows, you do your two day course, get a learners permit, buy a LAMS legal bike and go off and play in traffic. It's been awesome fun, just being able to ride whenever I felt like it, even on my old bunky. Better to have your fucked Hyo that at least gets you out on the road than some awesome open class machine that just collects dust till one of your mates can come and hold your dick for you. Buy an open class bike when you have a license for it.

I would say ride it till it gives up, but with things like mirrors and exhaust, you're a chance of getting pulled over, defected and fined, then forced to spend the money anyway.

    what *fish said.

spending money on 250s when you're going to upgrade in 9-12 months = full of fail

you will not get back the money you spend, or even close to it.

don't run it into the ground (ensure you service it and maintain it in a safe ridable condition), but other than that don't spend a cent on it.

i'd fix the mirror though as in addition to being useful, its a yellow sticker/safety issue.

I went through that phase with the last bike so i'm over it...the one i have now is for getting to/from work and mucking around on.
Except for the engine it's all cosmetic damage, I've run 4L of oil (not at once, few oil changes) through it the last two weeks with nothing abnormal coming out so far
. Korider has got some good info by people who have had similair problems, but they ranged from leaking gasket to mashed crankshaft bearing.

That's what I did with mine, just kept it in good mechanical condition as you will never get back the money you spend prettying it up. Fix the engine (provided it's not heinously expensive) and then sell it when you finish your RE license.
Is such a thing even possible?

hyo parts are cheap as...new valves $12 a piece, full oem exhaust system $200, camshaft $100. I considered putting together a full engine a few months ago...what a stupid idea that was

I once wrote a small bit of annoying thread about this once... Thrashing your old dunga as opposed to buying a new bike...

Thrash shit into it!!!! and don't feel remorse when it dies... -there's a good chance it might/will go hard for as long as you have it ;-)

Didn't you also post threads about crashing, does thrashing mean not riding with care?

Some people ride their bikes hard and keep them for years with regular servicing, others ride their bikes hard and the driveline outlasts the rest of the bike when they slide down the road or t-bone some crazy driver who shouldn't have been on their road.
