When to buy R license bike?
Just wanted to see who bought their R bike whilst on R-E's (and how? borrow mates bikes, pay for hire?) or wait till obtained their R license and test ride/shopped around then bought.
Latter seems logical to me, but still wanted to know?

I was too impatient. I got my 600 a week after having my RE licence. Couldnt ride it on the road so I made it a track bike.

I bought mine about 4 or 5 weeks bfore i did my RE. But, as my R1 turns like a boat, i ended up doing a lesson with tai at elite on a suzuki gs500 and then doing my assessment on that. I think it reflected well on my behalf as the assessor saw that i went out of my way to get some lessons with an instructer and, for around $140 i got piece of mind knowing i was on a bike with a turning circle less than 10metres. :p

I wouldn't buy it before you passed, or if you had to do it then not more than a month before your test is booked. I think the temptation to ride it would be too great.

i got 250 licence before i bought a 250.
got full class before i bought an extension.
So i could test ride the bikes properly before i bought them, rather than blindly picking the one that looked the prettiest, or people told me i should buy.

This will be a skewed thread. I think you'll find those who bought their R bikes before obtaining their R class most likely rode out of class. And it's unlikely they'll come here and set themselves up for some flaming.

Yeah true, but I dont want to know where they bought them from, if they rode it home, did they continue riding .....
Just want to know if they bought it (assuming it sat in garage) or obtained their license.

this is a difficult question,
I sold my 250 early thinking it might take a while, ended up going quick and I went nearly 3 months without a bike, downside lack of practice and confidence going for R, upside I had the new bike ready to go as soon as I got back with my new license, given choice and money Id keep the 250 until I had the R but also have the big bike

Bought the 600 nearly 3 months after passing R class.
I bought the 250 without riding it, but I really wanted to test ride the big one before I bought it.
R class came, I used the instructor's bike for the lesson/test.
Went test riding and looking for that 'special' bike that got my blood pumping that I could afford. Rode everything I could in that time frame, then went on holiday for a month to Europe to dwell on it
Came back, rode the two I had narrowed it down to one last time... And finally bought the thing.
I love it and I am so glad I test rode as many bikes as I did.
Wait and ride lots, thats my advice.
