My mum has had her R class since she was my age, so she shadowed me heaps. And there were shadows from the LNRs that didnt mind shadowing me (waves at Stephan). So, if u have the resources, use them.

And.... I may have gone down to the shops a few times.. (Naughty naughty)

i got my 636 about 4 months before i had my r-class license test. i was lucky that there were good people (hiho) that shadowed me to the newb rides so i got plenty of practice on a bigger bike. having said that i still did lessons with steve at elite on a hornet 900 as it was miles better to do o turns with.

theres no harm in buying your bike before you have your full license- especiallly if theres a great deal available on the bike you want. i just would keep the riding to shadowed rides, thats all

I bought my 600 a couple of weeks ago. Still on my R-E licence. Still have my 250 so I can still get out and ride without a shadow when I need to. Test rode on my learners (it was a private sale).

Will be booking a couple of lessons in the next couple of weeks and then go for my test asap.

It's hard to see the big bike there and not ride it but I'm not willing to risk getting caught so without the shadow it's not leaving home.... it's called self control!

I decided what bike to get mainly by financial constraints, read lots (and lots and lots) of reviews and looked around for a couple of months. Sat on this one, price was acceptable, felt good & was a blast to ride. Easy.

rode with a shadow (most of the time) or bike at undercover under the patio looking bored. Still had the 250 to ride

Latter seems logical to me, but still wanted to know?

Got mine after i had my RE for 9 months.

I'd ridden dirt bikes as a kid so had a lot of the bike control worked out already.

IMHO "when" to get it depends on how competent you are on the bike.

I did 9,000+ km on my 250 in those 9 months.

If you've had your RE for 12-18 months and not ridden much, you may still be better off sticking on a 250.

Short answer - it depends....

was pretty easy, have got long legs and wanted a mid-size sports bike so there was only one i could sit on comfortably

Not a bad idea tho to go for a few lessons and get an idea of what bike you want to go for

I always wanted a ZX6 to begin with... Loved it, read all the reviews and everything.
Sitting on them felt ok as well... But am I glad I test rode them first.
I HATED it. I rode an 04 model, it was just not the bike for me and I knew it the moment I rode out of the driveway. I thought I would give it an opportunity to impress me but it just kept getting worse... As the people who have test ridden lots of bikes will know sometimes you just find one that "isn't for you".

The ZX6 was that bike for me and I'm glad I tested it first.

Then it was the gut wrenching decision between the CBR and GSXR.
I picked the Gixxer and I love it, but I would still love a CBR as a 'bunky'
So I'm making it my point to get that CBR600RR that Rooster was teasing us with a few weeks ago. That way I can ride both at any time and I won't have to dream anymore!

There are plenty of guys who rode with L`s on their big bike....not as cool as riding without, but at least you are insured....

If you couldnt resist the temptation to obtain it then you wouldnt be able to resist the temptation to ride it out of class.

I had my r-e for years then had no bike for a year then got a GSX750 and thought I'd better get a lic for this thing.
My dad had a ltd450 at the time so he shadowed me for 3 rides then I booked a instucter for a 1 hour lesson to touch up any bad habits and to shadow me to my test and passed.

Buy it when you get a deal that's too good to refuse.
Thats what happened to me, still have a couple of months to wait for R's but I still have my 250 to ride around when i don't have a shadow.

/Yeah thats what happened to me

Got the R1 in Jan but cant go for my licence for at least another month.

But liek thro said too, if you dont ride enough on your 250 you probably wont be experienced enough for a bigger bike.

I put 15000km on the dirt bike/motard within a year. 10000 of them in the first 6 months. And, i was working FIFO. But the more experience you have the better you will be on the bike.

So you went from a 250 to an R1?
