Hey Dom
Doing my test on Tuesday and if I ride like I did for my last lesson I reckon I will be failing. Couldn't manage to do a thing right. I am hoping that's a passing thing though.....

I failed my REs first time I attempted.
Nothing to be ashamed of, but most people don't create a thread about it until they pass
I was gutted at the time but understood why I failed. It was something completely in my control that I did not have down pat before the test but I thought I'd give it a go and see how I went.
Now I have my big boys license, so I can look back on my RE attempt and say "I'm glad I wasn't passed the first time. The assessor might have been doing me a favour by keeping me alive."
So thanks unknown assessor from Mandurah. You cost me about $150 with the re booking fee and a few extra lessons... But hey, I'm alive to bitch about it aren't I?

I haven't bothered hiding it, although haven't put a huge post up about it either. I failed the other day, even though most people I've ridden with were fairly confident with my riding and my instructor expected a perfect pass from me. I was ready for the test, practised the expected route, o-turns perfect, e-stop not 100% tidy but excellent stopping distance and under control.
The examiner caught me on 4 things, unfortunately assigned a full point penalty to all of them despite two of them usually being "fair" or quarter point penalties. Perhaps it's a quarter point for a car license test, full point if on the bike (bike tests marked more critically).
My gripes:
1 point for not head-checking before an intersection. I know I did at every intersection, I won't go through a green light without being happy it's clear. I must not be moving my head enough to have it spotted by the examiner, perhaps I'm getting a 'normal' riding style from the LNR's rather than the 'pass a test' style that I need?
I lost another full point for doing 50 in a 60 zone. I assumed from Gt Eastern lights onto Lloyd St (Midland) was 50 until signposted at 60, so waited until first 60 sign to speed up. I didn't expect a full point for this, on the scorecard "unreasonably slow" only has a tickbox for a "fair"/quarter point. I didn't want an immediate fail by doing 60 in a possible 50. I'm kicking myself for not asking the examiner what speed zones we were going to go through as he was a decent bloke and may have told me up front what he wanted. (Although when going through the test result, I couldn't get a clear answer from him as to where it became a 60 zone, or whether it's 60 the entire length...)
Either of these could have made a difference and got me through, now have to wait another month, retest, pay for instructors time and rebook fee again.

Padfoot, out of curiosity, what could you not get down pat?

O-Turns
Life savers those ones aren't they
Ok, tongue was planted firmly in cheek for the "life-saving" remark, but I did deserve to fail. I could not O-Turn on the CBR very well at all, I kept losing my balance and putting my foot down.
But on a serious note, although O-Turns don't have a marked effect on your life span, they do promote good throttle/clutch/brake control... And I AM thankful for the extra practice I was required to do. I think it made me a better rider.

i do o-turns ok on the cibby, it seems highish revs, 2nd gear and lots of back brake do the trick however this is what im not sure of- how much room do you get to do one? a 2lane-street, a dead-end sort of size, a single laner? Got my test in 2 weeks, and can throw the cbr125 around an o-turn much easier, so might try that.

I got a normal residential street, both times.
Its hard, but not impossible.
If you are going to do it on your cibbie, make sure you can do them 100% beforehand.... Otherwise just do it on the 125. Don't listen to the haters that say "you should do it on your bike because thats what you are riding after the test", just do what you are comfortable with.

they won't tell you what speed zones you are going through, you are expected to be wary of speed signs etc and go at appropriate speed til you know of recommended speed along the road, but losing a full point is a bit much, i would've marked half/quarter point for it. it's different the way the car test (they don't go by full point, half point, etc) is marked compared to bike test.

Haven't failed a license test yet, I hold a bunch of them.
There's no shame in failing a test, just recognise where you went wrong and correct it. Now, if only the licensing process itself wasn't fundamentally broken...
**edit: there might however be shame in failing half a dozen times. If you do this, take the fuckin' hint.

Yeah, much the same when I went for my car licence first. Had been bush driving for a few years already.
Did my first R-E test in the middle of a storm, and didn't cancel an indicator quick enough. Insta-fail. instructor Vic was more pissed off than I was!
Second time aced it (and again with the storms!)
As Cam said, so long as you correct your mistakes, and not just for the test. Live and learn, but learn and stay alive!

RE passed the first time, altho I did ask the assessor "are you sure?" I was sooooo certain I had failed it.
I did fail my drivers licence the first time...or rather I didnt actually finish the test. Guy drove into the back of the car as we were sitting at lights, and I ended up banging my head sideways into the window. So theoretically....not my fault!

Yeah I failed my r/e first time a few weeks ago.. I think i wore myself out on the double lesson before the test.. but I was excessively nervous too... I made some stupid mistakes.
e.g. went to far into an intersection, and had to stop quickly when a car came, 1 point; locked the fears, and couldn't restart quickly enough - marked down 1 point for 'not knowing starting procedure', 55 in a 50 zone... 1 point; no head check or indicate.. frankly BS... I did both.. the instructor blocked my vision of the idiot cyclist overtaking us parked by riding in the far lane towards oncoming traffic.
Second test, a few small mistakes.. but I had a head cold, which strangly made me too tired and stuffy headed to worry.. I just wanted to go to bed...
But got there in the end, and I feel much more confident, almost glad I didn't pass the first time.. I feel like I earnt my pass...
